Job Summary

The classroom teacher under the direction of the school principal is responsible for creating a positive learning environment where students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and lifelong learning skills. Responsibilities include establishing rapport with students, parents, and colleagues, motivating students, differentiating curriculum, utilizing effective teaching techniques, supervising students, evaluating students, communicating with parents, and participating in faculty meetings.

Essential Functions

  • Teach core content area(s) aligned with the USBE's Core Curriculum and other approved learning activities.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, providing individualized and small group instruction to meet the needs of students.
  • Utilize effective teaching techniques to translate lesson plans into productive student learning experiences.
  • Use computers and other technological classroom support equipment in student instruction.
  • Supervise students in various settings (indoor and outdoor), including recess duty, gymnasium activities, and in all types of weather and air quality.
  • Evaluate students' academic and social growth, maintain appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Implement Proficiency-Based Learning in evaluating students.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences, telephone calls, emails, student planners, school website, and other appropriate means.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals regarding the student's academic and personal growth areas.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment in the classroom and on the school campus.
  • Participate in faculty meetings as required.
  • Administer appropriate student attendance policies and procedures.
  • Participate in educator evaluation procedures as per district guidelines.
  • Administer group standardized tests in accordance with state and district testing procedures.
  • Sponsor student activities.
  • Select and requisition books and instructional materials; maintain required inventory records.
  • Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, colleagues, and members of the community.
  • Understand and adhere to laws, district policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school staff, district staff, and members of the community.
  • Demonstrate professional ethics as outlined by the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission.
  • Create an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer and educational technological skills.
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive learning environment and handle classroom management issues in a calm manner.
  • Effective multi-tasking and time management skills.

Required Training and Education

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid Professional Educator License for the State of Utah within the relevant "Licensure Area of Concentration" and if applicable, "Endorsement."
  • A Utah State Board of Education (USBE) approved cleared criminal background check.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects.
  • Ability to talk or hear.
  • Visual abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to focus.
  • Physical demands require moving and lifting supplies, equipment, etc. up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Teachers in P.E., CTE, Theatre, and/or Art may be required to frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
