2nd ASSISTANT ENGINEER PLD CLASS I.

About the Role

This position involves maintaining the continuous operating efficiency of dredge machinery and systems to prevent damage and ensure proper functioning.

Responsibilities

• Maintain continuous operating efficiency to prevent damage to machinery.
• Check and control operation of heating, refrigerating, plumbing, and water supply systems for the dredge.
• Observe gages such as pressure gages, vacuum gages, fuel oil gages, tachometers, and pyrometers to determine proper functioning of machinery.
• Repair engine room machinery as outlined by the Chief Engineer and/or technical specifications.
• Repair fuel lines, grinding valves, cylinders, pistons, and shears in auxiliary pumps and machinery.
• Perform common Second Assistant Engineer Pipeline Dredge Class 1 tasks, including handling controls, operations, and maintenance of engine room machinery and equipment.
• Control propelling engines on signal and advise appropriate personnel on malfunctions of work equipment and/or procedures.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position is covered by DOT rules and USACE ER 690-1-1218.
• May be subject to random alcohol and drug testing on an unannounced basis.
• Must complete a pre-employment and annual physical examination to ensure required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties.
• Must hold a U.S. Coast Guard License of Assistant Engineer Near Coastal 6000 Horsepower or greater.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Tankerman-PIC Barge class D or above within 12 months of entrance on duty.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
• Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412 or a Memorandum of Understanding regarding drug and alcohol testing.
• Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
• This position requires a 1-year probationary period.
• Direct deposit of pay is required.

You must demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials, that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to perform the work of a 2nd Assistant Engineer PLD Class I without more than normal supervision. Failure to meet this element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort and Working Conditions

• Work is performed from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, often in hard-to-reach places.
• Requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
• Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Work is performed inside and outside, subjecting the employee to varying climatic conditions, abnormal noises, temperature extremes, danger of burns, irritation from grease and oils, bruises, strains, and hazards from moving machinery.
• Additional risks include possible drowning from falling overboard, electrical shock, falls on slippery decks or steep stairways, and cranks.
