2nd Assistant Engineer PLD CL 1.

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Must successfully complete and pass pre-employment physical and drug screen, and be included in the randomized drug testing program. This is a seasonal position; you may be placed in nonpay status when work is unavailable.

Responsibilities

• Stand a regular watch and assist the shift operator in the care and operation of engine room equipment by making frequent checks of temperature and pressure gauges for proper reading.
• Grease equipment using a pressure gun, selecting the proper lubricant for different locations.
• Maintain the engine room in a clean and orderly condition.
• Stand by the control panel during peak load conditions to keep generators in balance so operations will not be delayed by one generator becoming overloaded and circuit breakers kicking out.
• Perform preventive maintenance work, including changing fuel oil filters, replacing pumps, changing oil, and assisting superiors with assembly and disassembly on major repair jobs.

Requirements

• Work in inclement weather conditions.
• Ability to do the work of a 2nd Assistant Engineer without more than normal supervision, including:
  • Assisting in the maintenance of engines and auxiliary equipment.
  • Operating equipment controls and reading/checking gauges.
  • Interpreting technical manuals or specifications.
• Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Use of measuring instruments.

Physical Effort & Working Conditions

• Physical Effort: Considerable physical and mental concentration is required during machinery operation and lubrication. The work requires continuous standing on metal decks, frequent bending, and stooping.
• Working Conditions: Work is primarily in the hold of a boat where noise is intensely disagreeable, and there is danger of electrical shock and burns.
