26-27 Temporary Faculty Pool (Lecturer) - Political Science

Fresno State’s Department of Political Science is a dynamic and diverse unit within the California State University system, serving approximately 230 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students in a NASPAA-accredited public administration program. The department is recognized for its balanced commitment to teaching, research, and public service across all major sub-disciplines of political science.

About the role

The department seeks qualified candidates to teach undergraduate courses, including but not limited to:

• Introduction to American Government and Institutions, with content on California government
• Other courses identified to meet student educational goals, such as Modern Politics, Public Policy, California Government, or Comparative Politics

Responsibilities

• Adhere to and implement university and system-wide policies as directed
• Prepare, deliver, conduct, proctor, and grade lectures, office hours, assignments, quizzes, projects, and exams
• Ensure classes meet as scheduled throughout the semester in the assigned mode (asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid)

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Political Science with an emphasis in American Politics (or a closely related field) from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent
• Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
• Experience teaching American Government or related college courses at the collegiate level

Qualifications

• Commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, evidenced by prior teaching experiences, evaluations, or other documentation
• Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level
• Experience teaching American Government at the collegiate level in California
• Ph.D. in Political Science (preferred)

Pay

Monthly salary ranges from $5,507 to $6,677 for full-time teaching (15 WTUs) for candidates with a Master’s degree, based on the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code 2358). Starting salaries are typically at or near the minimum of the range. Actual compensation is adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per academic term.

Schedule

Appointments are temporary, part-time, and vary by semester based on student enrollment and funding. Positions may be filled on short notice prior to the start of the academic term. The pool remains active for two academic terms, with reapplication required for continued consideration.

• Fall 2026: August 19, 2026 – December 22, 2026
• Spring 2027: January 15, 2027 – May 26, 2027

This is a conditional appointment contingent upon budget, enrollment, and collective bargaining provisions. Appointees must demonstrate eligibility to work in the U.S.; the university does not sponsor work visas for temporary faculty.
