26-27 Extended Learning Program Coordinator (ELP)
Position Summary
The Extended Learning Program Coordinator is a full-time position responsible for coordination of services and the delivery of academic services to support the Extended Learning Program that serves Somerville Public School students who are pregnant/parenting, chronically absent, long term suspended, and/or at risk of dropping out. Students enrolled in ELP shall be taught to the same academic standards established for all students in the Commonwealth. ELP employs highly qualified teachers, counselors and tutors. The Coordinator will oversee the work of the Extended Learning Program teachers, tutors and counselors, in partnership with school/district administrators, and parents/guardians of participating students. Working with school administrators, the Extended Learning Coordinator will apply best practices of adult learning and credit recovery. The Coordinator will assure that Somerville students in need of a flexible learning environment and/or on long-term suspension shall have the opportunity to earn a high school diploma.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Coordination of the academic program for students at risk of dropping out, and those on extended suspensions (Under Massachusetts law, Ch. 222).
- Collaborate with Somerville High School Principal, Full Circle Principal, Counseling Department Head, and Somerville High School Learning Community staff.
- Provide outreach to students at high risk of dropping out and those on extended suspension
- Oversee the provision of an individualized program of study using an online learning platform that will allow students to continue their education.
- Work with school staff to facilitate any required special education needs students may have.
- Supervise and facilitate academic and social-emotional support components of the program in collaboration with Full Circle Principal, Somerville High School Principal, Department Chairs, and Somerville High School Learning Community staff.
- Provide a clear organizational structure, supervision and scheduling of Extended Learning staff.
- Coordinate In-person Positive Behavior Interventions Such As Restorative Justice, Mediation, Individual and group therapeutic services, Prevention and Intervention Specialist education.
- Follow School Committee policies and administrative procedures.
- Participate in an Advisory Committee to assist in review of outcomes data and make recommendations for program improvement as needed.
- Meet regularly and consult with the Advisory Committee regarding dropout prevention efforts, policies, procedures, and professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services in coordination with the Assistant Superintendent of Academics.
Qualifications
- Master's degree
- Five years outstanding teaching/counseling or related experience at the high school level including some experience with young adult learners
- Experience with instruction using an online learning platform
- Experience with computer-based programs and internet resources
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational management skills
- Dual licensure including SPED, ESL, or bilingual is preferred
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform duties while standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work with students at various physical levels, including bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
- Ability to lift and/or move materials and equipment weighing up to 15 pounds.
- Ability to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate standard classroom tools and technology (e.g., computers, tablets, instructional materials).
- Ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively with students, staff, and families, both verbally and in writing.
