About the role
The Health Assistant position at Norman Public Schools does not require a formal education but prefers previous work or volunteer experience with children, teenagers, and clerical experience. The position requires completion of an orientation/training with the Health Services Coordinator, including various health services and medical conditions of students and staff.
Responsibilities
- Greet all students seeking assistance in the clinic and determine their individual needs.
- Administer medications, treatments, or procedures prescribed by a licensed physician as delegated by the building Principal.
- Provide first aid care to students with minor injuries, reporting significant findings to the Health Services Coordinator, supervising school nurse, and Principal.
- Absent from contacting parents/guardians of ill or injured students.
- Maintain and update student health records while maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintain sickroom equipment and supplies after completing necessary training.
- Perform CPR, First Aid, and Medication Administration.
- Specific training includes care of students with: Diabetes, Asthma, Allergic Reactions, and Seizure Disorders.
- Additional training covers nebulizer treatments, insulin, glucagons, epi-pen administration, urinary catheterization, gastrostomy or tube feedings, or other procedures required by the student's health plan.
- Assist in school immunization compliance and health screenings such as: hearing, vision, vital signs, and head lice checks.
- Help manage the computerization of school district operations, providing training and support to district staff in the use of administrative computer systems.
- Utilize discretion, ingenuity, and independent judgment to solve complex problems related to the job.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Previous work or volunteer experience with children, teenagers, and clerical experience preferred.
- Ability to complete orientation/training with Health Services Coordinator.
- Knowledge of CPR, First Aid, and Medication Administration.
- Specific training in care of students with: Diabetes, Asthma, Allergic Reactions, and Seizure Disorders.
