About the Department

The Literacy, Early, Bilingual, and Special Education Department (LEBSE) offers courses for the preparation, professional development, and advancement of Pre-K-12 teachers. The department houses four graduate programs: Literacy, Early Education, Multilingual/Multicultural, and Special Education, as well as one advanced credential: Reading Literacy and Leadership Specialist Credential. It also provides courses and supervision for four California teaching credential programs (Multiple, Single Subject, PK-3 ECE Specialist Instruction, and Education Specialist) and the Bilingual Authorization Program. Faculty are actively involved in teaching, scholarship, service, and grant leadership.

Temporary faculty members are responsible for adhering to university and system-wide policies, preparing and delivering lectures, conducting office hours, assigning and grading homework, quizzes, projects, and exams, and ensuring classes meet as scheduled in the assigned mode (asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Appointment Details

This is a temporary, part-time lecturer pool position. Appointments are contingent upon budget, enrollment, and order-of-assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement. Positions are filled as needed, often on short notice prior to the start of the academic term. The pool remains active for two academic terms; reapplication is required to remain in the pool beyond that period.

Anticipated semesters for appointment:

• Fall 2026: August 19, 2026 – December 22, 2026
• Spring 2027: January 15, 2027 – May 26, 2027

Requirements

• Master’s degree (for 100-level courses) or doctorate (for 200-level courses) in Literacy, Early Education, Bilingual Education, Special Education, and/or Multilingual-Multicultural Education from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.
• A clear teaching credential (Multiple, Single Subject, PK-3, or Education Specialist) or administrative credential (or equivalent for out-of-state certifications).
• 2-3 years of successful teaching experience in PreK-12.
• For PK-3 credential program courses: Credentialed or hold a Master Teacher or higher-level Child Development Permit, with recent professional experience in early childhood settings aligned with California’s Preschool Learning Foundations and Curriculum Frameworks.
• For online courses: Online certification or completion of QLT training (QLT link).
• Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, evidenced by prior teaching experiences, evaluations, or other documentation.
• Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
• Active record of professional development for teachers in grades PreK-12.
• Experience teaching in a virtual environment.

Pay

Compensation is based on qualifications and experience within the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code = 2358 for Academic Year Lecturers). The salary range for Temporary Faculty with a Master’s degree is $5,507–$6,677 per month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are typically at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary is adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per academic term.
