Department Overview

The Department of Biology at California State University, Fresno offers diversified undergraduate and graduate education that spans the breadth of modern Biology—from the inner workings of cells to the structure of whole ecosystems. About the Role

The department seeks qualified candidates to teach undergraduate Biology courses and/or labs, including but not limited to:

  • BIOL 131: Parasitology
  • BIOL 132: General Entomology
  • BIOL 157: Immunology
  • BIOL 158: Cancer Biology
  • BIOL 161: Plant Physiology

Additional courses may be assigned based on student enrollment and departmental needs.

Responsibilities

  • Adherence to and implementation of university and system-wide policies as directed per Academic Policy Manual 306, paragraph 2.
  • Preparation, delivery, conducting, proctoring, and grading of lectures, office hours, homework assignments, quizzes, class projects, and midterm/final exams.
  • Ensuring all classes are offered and meet as scheduled throughout the semester in the assigned mode (asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Requirements

For High Enrollment General Education Courses:

  • Education: A Master's degree in Biology (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent).
  • Experience: Demonstrated commitment to excellence built on merit, talent, diversity, accessibility, and equal opportunity. Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

For Upper-Division Specialty and/or Graduate-Level Courses:

  • Education: A PhD in a Biology-related field or sufficient industry/clinical/private sector experience commensurate with departmental teaching expectations.
  • Experience: Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. Expertise in a closely-related discipline.

Compensation

The salary ranges are established by the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code = 2358 for Academic Year Lecturers). For Temporary Faculty with a Master's degree, the salary range is $5,507–$6,677 per month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are typically at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary will be adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per academic term.

Schedule

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, with positions filled as needed based on student enrollment and funding. Appointments are often made just prior to the start of the academic term, and applicants may need to begin teaching on short notice. The pool remains active for two academic terms; reapplication is required to remain in the pool beyond that period.

  • Fall 2026: August 19, 2026 – December 22, 2026
  • Spring 2027: January 15, 2027 – May 26, 2027

Review of applications begins as early as June 15, 2026, for Fall 2026 assignments, with a deadline of July 1, 2026, for full consideration. The projected deadline for Spring 2027 hiring is October 31, 2026. The job announcement for the 2026–2027 academic year closes on March 1, 2027.
