About the role

The Governor’s Fellow position at the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (NJOHSP) is a full-time, one-year unclassified appointment supporting the Sherrill-Caldwell Administration’s priorities and NJOHSP’s mission to lead and coordinate homeland security efforts, including counterterrorism, counterintelligence, cybersecurity, preparedness, and resiliency across government, law enforcement, and the private sector.

This role focuses on collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Education’s youth initiative on targeted violence, threatening behavior, and terrorism prevention training.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research and policy analysis on threat assessment, behavioral intervention, and terrorism prevention strategies aligned with the administration’s top priorities.
• Review and evaluate NJOHSP existing policies, procedures, and processes to ensure alignment with the strategic plan and assess impact on youth-focused targeted violence and terrorism prevention initiatives.
• Attend meetings, analyze case trends, and contribute to collaborative efforts aimed at preventing targeted acts of violence.
• Prepare briefs, reports, and presentations with evidence-based recommendations for NJOHSP leadership, interagency partners, and external stakeholders.
• Assist with other agency projects involving youth initiatives, including the New Jersey Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) program, school threats, Interfaith Advisory Council, and the New Jersey Statewide Threat Assessment Team. Tasks may involve project coordination, stakeholder communication, and special assignments.
• Participate in group programs for Governor’s Fellows sponsored by the Governor’s Office.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of work experience in a relevant field.
• Selection is based on excellence in academics and/or professional achievement, proven leadership ability, commitment to public service, effective written communication skills, and evidence of teamwork.
• Applicants with military service or long-term public service (e.g., AmeriCorps, Teach for America, Peace Corps) may also be considered.
• College credits may be combined with experience to meet requirements (30 semester-hour credits = 1 year of experience).
• Professional experience is defined as work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive, requiring specialized knowledge and independent judgment.
• Applicants with foreign degrees must provide a U.S. equivalency evaluation.
• A valid New Jersey driver’s license is required only if operating a vehicle is necessary for essential duties.

Security Clearance

All NJOHSP employees must be U.S. citizens to be eligible for a Secret or Top-Secret federal security clearance. A criminal and personal background investigation will be conducted for all personnel.

Work Arrangements

NJOHSP offers a hybrid work schedule of up to 2 days of remote work per week under its Pilot Telework Program, as well as a flexible workweek with one day off per week or pay period, subject to operational needs.

New employees must establish New Jersey residency within one year of employment per the New Jersey First Act.
