2026 Summer Programs - SPED Extended School Year (ESY): Paraprofessionals
About the role
The summer program offers various specialized programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of special education students. Applicants should demonstrate flexibility, collaboration, adaptability, and teamwork.
Responsibilities
- Work in conjunction with the Somerville Recreation Department to support students with severe cognitive disabilities.
- Train in CPR and First Aid (CPI).
- Teach academic subjects such as math, writing, and reading to students with a range of disabilities including autism, multiple disabilities, emotional impairments, and cognitive impairments.
- Participate in mandatory orientation and professional development sessions.
Requirements
Preference is given to those who have completed specialized training in:
- Specialized Intensive Program (S.K.I.P.) for medically fragile/severe special needs students.
- Life Skills, self-contained, certified Special Needs.
- CPI training for students with severe cognitive disabilities.
- Autism-specific training.
- Kindergarten and Pre-school programs with CPI training.
- Academic Special Education roles teaching math, writing, and reading to students with various disabilities.
Qualifications
Experience working with students with autism, multiple disabilities, emotional impairments, cognitive impairments, and multiple disabilities is preferred.
Skills
Strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups are essential.
Benefits
Mandatory orientation and professional development sessions will be provided.
Pay
$30 per hour worked, Monday through Friday, 5 days per week, from 7:45am to 1:30pm.
Schedule
4-week program: July 6th, 2026– July 31, 2026
5-week program: July 6th, 2026– August 7, 2026
