2026-27 Lecturer Pool Department of Languages and Cultures

About the Role

The Languages and Cultures Department in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts is collecting application materials for a pool of lecturers with positions available as determined by need during the 2026-27 academic year. The department offers courses in multiple languages, area studies, and general education at the undergraduate level and in second language acquisition at the graduate level. Appointments from the lecturer pool are temporary and often made just prior to the start of the academic term. We are primarily seeking instructors to teach in person, but we are gradually expanding online offerings. We especially welcome applications from qualified candidates to teach Japanese and Korean language classes.

Pay

• Lecturer A/2 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $5,507 – $6,677 per month
• Lecturer B/3 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $6,221 – $13,224 per month
• Lecturer C/4 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $6,825 – $14,523 per month
• Lecturer D/5 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $8,593 – $15,211 per month

Anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank.

Responsibilities

• Teaching lower and upper division undergraduate courses and some graduate courses.
• Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.

Requirements

• Master of Arts in a related field for undergraduate courses.
• PhD in second language acquisition, applied linguistics, or a related field for graduate courses.
• For positions in teaching a language, evidence of advanced proficiency in the language to be taught and a demonstrated knowledge of and ability to use communicative teaching methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching experience in the area of specific need.
• Evidence of effective teaching.

The Department of Languages and Cultures offers majors and minors in Spanish (including a pre-credential Spanish BA), German, Asian Studies, and Latin American Studies, and minors in Japanese, French, Italian, European Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and African Studies.
