About the College and Department
The College of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering (NSME) consists of eight departments, offering state-of-the-art facilities and new degree programs to empower the Kern County economy. The Department of Geological Sciences has 7 tenured/tenure-track faculty, part-time lecturers, and support staff. It offers BA, BS, and MS degrees in Geology, a minor in Geology, and a BS in Environmental Science. The program emphasizes experiential learning, preparing students for careers in geoscience and environmental science, and engages in community outreach and research relevant to Kern County and beyond.
About the Role
The Department of Geological Sciences seeks qualified candidates for its part-time lecturer pool to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geoscience and environmental science. Opportunities may include teaching in the evenings or during regular business hours. Preferred teaching areas include Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, Engineering Geology, and general education courses such as physical geology and environmental science. Preference is given to applicants able to participate in weekend field trips and teach in-person laboratories and lectures. Teaching materials are available for most courses.
Appointments may last from one day to a full semester and are subject to budgetary authorization. Applications are valid for the 2026-27 academic year only and must be resubmitted annually.

Requirements
- An advanced degree in geoscience or environmental science
Preferred Qualifications
- A PhD in geoscience or environmental science
- For introductory-level courses: a record of successful teaching in geoscience or environmental science at the university level
- For upper division and/or graduate-level courses: a record of successful teaching at the university level in similar courses and/or significant professional experience relevant to the course topic
Pay
Salary is dependent on educational preparation and experience, with the following ranges for the Lecturer - Academic Year classification:
- Lecturer AY (Range 2): $5,507 - $6,677 per month
- Lecturer AY (Range 3): $6,221 - $13,224 per month
- Lecturer AY (Range 4): $6,825 - $14,523 per month
- Lecturer AY (Range 5): $8,593 - $15,211 per month
The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience. Salary is pro-rated for part-time assignments.
