Sacramento State’s Department of Anthropology seeks qualified part-time lecturers to teach undergraduate courses in person, including both major and General Education offerings.

About the department

The Department of Anthropology provides a comprehensive four-field anthropology curriculum and serves nearly 170 majors. It offers bachelor’s degrees with concentrations in Culture, Language and Society (CLS), Archaeology and Biological Anthropology (ABA), and Integrative Anthropology (IA), as well as a minor and a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology.

Responsibilities

  • Instruction, class preparation, and grading
  • Holding office hours
  • Additional duties as assigned by the department

Course assignments—including dates, time, and modality—are determined by the Department Chair under the direction of the College Dean. Appointments are conditional based on enrollment and budget, typically for one semester (occasionally for an academic year), and may be renewed based on department needs, funding, and performance.

Requirements

  • ANTH 1A: Master’s degree in Anthropology or a closely related discipline, and a minimum of three years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) college-level teaching experience
  • All other courses: Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Anthropology

Preferred qualifications

  • Ability to teach courses with enrollments of 45–50 students
  • Experience teaching General Education (GE) courses
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and to incorporate inclusive teaching practices
  • Teaching, research, and/or professional experience relevant to the subject area

Pay

Initial rank and salary are based on professional experience and educational background. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges (full-time rate for 15 weighted teaching units) are:

  • Lecturer A: $5,507 – $6,677 per 15 WTUs
  • Lecturer B: $6,221 – $13,224 per 15 WTUs
  • Lecturer C: $6,825 – $14,523 per 15 WTUs
  • Lecturer D: $8,593 – $15,211 per 15 WTUs

Semester compensation is pro-rated based on assigned units. Example: a Lecturer A assigned 3 units at the minimum rate receives $1,101.40 per check for six checks, totaling $6,608.40 for the semester.
