2026-2027 Breast Imaging Fellowship

The Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, Breast Imaging Division at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for multiple Clinical Instructor positions beginning July 1, 2026. This one-year post-graduate fellowship program is part of the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) Fellowship Match process, sponsored by the Society of Breast Imaging.

About the role

This fellowship focuses on all aspects of breast imaging, including:

• Screening and diagnostic mammography (including tomosynthesis)
• Contrast-enhanced mammography
• Breast ultrasound
• Breast MRI

Image-guided breast procedures performed include:

• Stereotactic, tomosynthesis-guided, ultrasound-guided, and MRI-guided core biopsies
• Wire/radioseed localizations

Optional moonlighting opportunities are available for fellows, providing final reads for ED patients on a 24/7 basis with overnight coverage. This work can be performed from home with subspecialty attending backup and helps maintain general radiology skills while increasing income.

Requirements

• MD or equivalent
• Completion of a residency in diagnostic radiology at an ACGME-accredited institution or a diagnostic radiology residency accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)

Application timeline

As per the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD), applications and interview offers will not be accepted until November 1, 2024. Exceptions to the embargo include:

• Applicants whose spouse/domestic partner is also applying for a medical fellowship in the same year
• Internal candidates
• Military candidates
• International candidates (defined as applicants from programs that are neither ACGME nor RCPSC-accredited; Canadian applicants are not excluded)

• Three current letters of recommendation
• USMLE Transcript (including Step I, II, and III scores or equivalent)
• ECFMG (if applicable)
