About the role

Under minimum supervision, operates, maintains, and troubleshoots building Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) systems and equipment to provide a comfortable and safe environment in all University facilities including classrooms, laboratories, offices, student residences, and refrigerators and freezers in accordance with applicable standards of the trade and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

• Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs building HVACR equipment consistent with manufacturer’s guidelines, operating design parameters, and accepted practices to optimize energy use.
• Installs HVACR units, including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
• Installs HVACR ductwork including flexible tubing and sheet metal construction.
• Troubleshoots and repairs HVACR units including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs computerized electronic, pneumatic, and direct digital control (DDC) devices related to HVACR control.
• Maintains and makes operating repairs on electrical equipment and appliances, oil and gas equipment, refrigerators/freezers, ice makers, and other refrigeration equipment.
• Operates and keeps in good working order a variety of equipment including hand tools, mobile electronic devices, measuring/diagnostic/testing meters, and instruments.
• Conserves, installs, recycles, and reclaims refrigerants.
• Reads and interprets complex blueprints, sketches, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• Performs brazing, silver and lead soldering, pipefitting, welding, and fabrication as required.
• Performs various carpentry, masonry, painting, and plastering work as required.
• Coordinates repairs with other trades affected by HVAC operations.
• Assists in furniture and event set ups and breakdowns, decorations for special functions, meetings, etc.
• Performs other duties as assigned within the normal scope of the department’s responsibilities and the individual’s capabilities.

Requirements

• HS diploma or equivalent and current documentation indicating successful completion of formal training classes or programs in HVACR work.
• Possess EPA Universal/R410A license.
• Currently classified and working as HVAC Technician 2nd Class and meets all qualifications for that role.
• A minimum of five years of service in the trade at Villanova University (upon the discretion of Facilities Management).
• Must possess and maintain personal hand tools required for the trade.
• Ability to research information from various sources to facilitate repairs of campus HVAC/R equipment (e.g., campus technical manuals, as-built prints, equipment supply distributors, internet websites).
• Ability to recover, recycle, and reclaim refrigerants adhering to HVAC/R industry standards, specifications, and protocols.
• Ability to record all refrigerant loss/charge amounts and manufacturer information on TMA work order when servicing campus HVAC/R equipment.
• Ability to perform preventative maintenance on all campus HVAC/R equipment using the campus work order system, visual inspection, verbal, or written instruction.
• Ability to properly lubricate, repair, replace, and align both direct and indirect mechanical drive components for all campus HVAC/R equipment.
• Ability to lubricate, repair, and replace all pumps serving campus HVAC/R equipment.
• Ability to verify proper operation of chilled/heating water hydronic generation equipment such as Centrifugal, Screw, Scroll, and Reciprocating Chillers, Gas and Oil-fired boilers.
• Capability to troubleshoot equipment control panels locally.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair all central heating/cooling air distribution systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot, repair, or replace all associated components of the campus chilled/heating hydronic water distribution systems.
• Ability to verify steam pressure is available to all campus heat exchangers, where applicable.
• Ability to install, secure, repair, or replace all associated components of the campus air distribution systems to optimize airflow and structural stability.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair all electric heat sources throughout the campus (e.g., reheat, air handler, auxiliary, and baseboard heating coils).
• Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, isolate, repair, or replace all associated components of direct expansion/refrigeration systems supporting a wide variety of applications throughout the campus.
• Ability to implement several pipefitting techniques to facilitate repairs of campus HVAC/R equipment (e.g., pipe threading, brazing, lead and silver soldering). Where applicable, must recover, pressurize, evacuate, and charge refrigerant properly to ensure HVAC/R equipment integrity.
• Ability to comprehend all control system components from source through end devices.
• Ability to comprehend direct digital control, pneumatic, electro-pneumatic, electronic, electric, and electro-mechanical controls.
• Ability to follow both verbal and written directions in English; interact with students, faculty, administration, and staff in a professional and positive manner.
• Ability to read and understand OSHA guidelines such as Material Safety Data Sheets, equipment safety data plates, fuel/chemical flash points, etc.
• Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and sequence of operations to diagnose proper operation of campus HVAC/R equipment.
• Physical ability to climb ladders, bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs.; ability to work in enclosed spaces.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Must not have any disciplinary actions on file within the previous twelve months of applying for this position.
• Must possess current ANSI/OSHA compliant training card to operate aerial lift, bucket truck, forklift, or all.
• Ability to erect and work on scaffolding as per OSHA standards.
• Excellent safety record.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current OSHA 10 certification or higher.
• Ability to operate aerial/scissor lift, bucket truck, and forklift.

Pay

$37.31 an hour.

Schedule

Full-time, 12-month position. Core hours are Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:00 PM. Starting earlier or staying later could be expected if emergency repairs are required.

Applicants must take a timed (90-minute) 135-question pre-qualification exam. Following the exam, a verbal panel-style interview lasting approximately 1 hour will be conducted. Must be able to meet and maintain Villanova University driving privileges as outlined by Villanova’s Risk Management’s Motor Vehicle Record Policy for Drivers of University Vehicles. This position will start on or after June 1, 2026.
