About the role
Under general supervision, this position performs a wide range of customer service duties, sales, and support functions in Guest Services at the Abilene Zoo. Provides administrative support to the Guest Service Managers and Assistant Managers and directs Zoo visitor traffic.
Responsibilities
- Greet and direct visitors to the Abilene Zoo, answer general questions, and provide information about zoo functions and activities.
- Provide administrative support for the Guest Service Managers and Assistant Managers.
- Assist with general customer service functions, including answering guest inquiries, giving directions, and processing incoming/outgoing calls.
- Process register payments, reservation and visitation paperwork, operate equipment, and prepare food.
- Maintain, inspect, clean, take inventory, and follow policies and procedures for assigned equipment, areas, and surrounding spaces.
- Assist with guest surveys and other reports.
- Guest Services employees over 18 years of age may operate a City vehicle and/or motorized equipment (trains, gators, and golf carts).
- Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or in the process of obtaining either.
- Valid driver’s license required for train operation (minimum 18 years of age).
- Food Handlers Permit required if preparing food.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Must be able to work in outdoor conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
- Bloodborne Pathogens and HazCom training required within 60 days of employment.
Skills
- Knowledge of administrative and office management principles, procedures, and practices.
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages).
- General customer service and cash handling skills.
- Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment.
- Excellent customer service and clear communication (oral and written).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of client information.
- Work independently, demonstrate initiative, and organize work activities to meet deadlines.
- Resourcefulness and tact when dealing with upset customers.
- Adaptability to changing work priorities.
- Ability to follow and enforce Abilene Zoo rules, policies, and procedures.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and the public.

Physical demands
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
- Overall strength demand: Medium – lifting no more than 50 pounds; carrying up to 25 pounds.
- Frequency of physical tasks during a typical workday:
- Extensive (70–100% of the time): Standing, vision, hearing, talking.
- Moderate (30–60% of the time): Walking, lifting, carrying.
- Infrequent (10–20% of the time): Pushing/pulling, overhead work, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting.
- Almost never (<10% of the time): Sitting, crawling, climbing, balancing.
Pay
Hourly pay range: $13.18 – $15.82 USD.
Schedule
Part-time, flexible schedule that may include nights, holidays, and weekends.
