About the role
The YReads! Program is a literacy/mentoring initiative for kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Pinellas County Schools, St. Petersburg, FL. It uses curriculum-based literacy instruction to help struggling readers in areas such as phonetics, sight word recognition, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Responsibilities
- Affords assistance and support to the program coordinator during YReads! hours.
- Assists in student supervision, helps maintain order, and positively reinforces "good choices" when appropriate.
- Assists students to and from the restroom.
- Aids in picking up and dropping off students around the school.
- Oversees and ensures that mandatory procedures are being followed when parents or guardians are picking up students.
- Maintains necessary paperwork: testing, volunteer and student sign-in/out logs.
Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Desire or interest in learning about literacy intervention.
- Experience working with children in an educational environment.
- Compassion and empathy for struggling readers.
- Tutoring experience strongly preferred.
Pay & Perks
- Part-time position, $15.00 per hour.
- After school hours, 4 days per week, approximately 15 hours per week.
