YPL Children's Services Department Head
Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is hiring a Youth/Children’s Services Department Head at the Centennial Hills Library.
About the role
Under general direction from the Branch Manager or designee, the Department Head exercises general supervision over the Youth/Children’s Services department. This position performs professional and supervisory work, including planning, coordination, and implementation of programs and partnerships, as well as the operation of the department at a branch library. Acts as Person-in-Charge (PIC) on a routine basis and as needed.
Responsibilities
- Supervises assigned staff, including performance coaching, career counseling, development, and conflict resolution.
- Develops relationships and communicates with the local community to establish programs and outreach initiatives supporting community and District goals.
- Leads collection development and maintenance activities for the assigned department.
- Plans, coordinates, and assigns outreach and library programming.
- Prepares and maintains files, records, and reports; handles confidential information with discretion.
- Sets short-term operational goals for the department (daily to annual).
- Organizes and reviews work for efficiency and accuracy.
- Monitors department compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, best practices, and District policies.
- Adapts to current and emerging trends in library administration and public administration; makes recommendations for future strategies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA-accredited college or university.
- One (1) year of supervisory experience as a professional librarian in a related library department (e.g., Children’s/Youth Services).
- Valid Nevada Driver’s License at the time of hire.
- Completion of LVCCLD’s Person-in-Charge (PIC) Training within six (6) months of assuming the position.
- District-provided AED/CPR certification within six (6) months of assuming the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three (3) years of professional librarian experience with at least two (2) years of supervisory experience in a public library.
Skills
- Proficiency in MS Office suite and automated library systems.
- Report and record-keeping abilities.
- Ability to implement strategic library services and objectives.
- Leadership with professional composure.
Physical Requirements
- Tasks may involve frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting/carrying objects of moderate weight (20-50 pounds).
Pay
Annual pay range: $84,403 – $113,109. Pay typically begins toward the entry of the range, with eligibility for annual merit and COLA increases per District policy. A relocation reimbursement of up to $2,500 is available for moves over 100 miles.
Schedule
- Full-time (40 hours per week), FLSA exempt position.
- Regular hours may include:
- Monday–Tuesday: 9:15 AM – 6:15 PM
- Wednesday: 11:15 AM – 8:15 PM
- Thursday: 9:15 AM – 6:15 PM
- Friday–Sunday: 9:15 AM – 6:15 PM
- Schedule may change based on the needs of the Library District.
