About the role
The Youth Services Behavioral Specialist (S) plays a crucial role in implementing individual and group treatment plans to facilitate behavioral changes necessary for youthful offender rehabilitation. They provide security, control, and ensure the safety of juveniles at Youth Development Centers or Juvenile Detention Centers, often working closely with court-ordered youth.
Responsibilities
- Implement individual and group treatment plans to promote behavioral change and rehabilitation of youthful offenders.
- Provide security and maintain custody of juveniles.
- Safeguard juveniles from each other and ensure their safety.
- Work closely with court-ordered youth, often in direct care roles.
- Engage in direct supervision and interaction with juveniles.
- Participate in the Juvenile Justice Officer Basic Training Certification Program.
Requirements
To qualify, candidates must have:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution, or
- Four years of related human services experience, or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Candidates must also meet the hiring and training standards set by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with people.
- Physical capability to apply proper methods and procedures to restrain juveniles and defend self after proper training.

Pay
Salary is based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations. A sign-on bonus of $3,000.00 is offered to new hires. Annual salary increases occur through a step pay plan, with initial salaries determined by total months of related education and experience above the minimum requirements.
Schedule
This is a full-time position with work hours varying depending on the facility. Candidates must be available to work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis and maintain a variable work schedule to meet the needs of juveniles and their families.
