About the role

The Youth Program Coordinator position plans, coordinates, administers, supervises and evaluates a wide variety of youth-focused recreation programs, athletic leagues, special events, and camps under limited supervision. This position is responsible for developing and managing engaging, inclusive opportunities for children in the community, including youth sports, enrichment programs, and family-oriented events.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, plans and implements youth athletic programs and leagues in assigned areas of responsibility for the community.
  • Develops, plans, and implements youth recreation programs, including enrichment activities, after-school programs, day camps, and child-focused special events.
  • Works closely with the Adult Program Coordinator to coordinate scheduling, facility use, and transition of programs between youth and adult age groups.
  • Promotes programs to school officials, community service groups, other city departments, and the public.
  • Schedules games, officials and sites for adult and youth sports; schedules and coordinates tournaments.
  • Assists in managing registration system including but not limited to; registers children for teams, collects fees.
  • Communicates internally within the department and City regarding program operations and facility scheduling.
  • Responds to questions, comments and complaints from participants and/or the public regarding programs and activities.
  • Coordinates programs and activities with input from participants and citizens; prepares flyers, letters, brochures, calendars and media releases regarding recreation programs and activities for publication and distribution.
  • Maintains and compiles records and statistics for personnel, programs and activities.
  • Assists in managing registration system including but not limited to; registers children for teams, collects fees.
  • Solicits volunteers to serve as coaches, instructors, program assistants, and provides required training and education for coaches and instructors and officials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation, social work, or a closely related field.
  • 2 years of increasingly responsible related experience, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience, that provides requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.
  • Certified Park Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification or ability to obtain is desired.
  • Bilingual background in Spanish and certification in CPR and First Aid is desired.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with the department director and all staff and volunteers, police department, other city departments, and officials, community groups, Chamber of Commerce, schools, local businesses, media, and the public.
  • Ability to analyze data and information using established criteria, in order to determine consequences and to identify and select alternatives.
  • Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, copy, record and transcribe data and information.
  • Ability to classify, compute, tabulate, and categorize data.
  • Ability to persuade, convince, and/or train others.
  • Ability to advise and interpret how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such code manuals, City ordinances, directories, State statutes, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with City personnel, Department personnel and City residents.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate percentages, fractions, decimals, volumes, ratios, present values, and spatial relationships. Ability to interpret basic descriptive statistical reports.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to use functional reasoning in performing influence functions. Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria. Ability to work well under pressure and handle stressful situations, to organize work and set priorities, managing time and resources to meet deadlines and changing demands within the entire operation of administrative services, perform duties with a minimum of supervision.

  • Supervision Received and/or Exercised: Works under the supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director. Requires the ability to provide first line supervision. Will supervise volunteers, interns, and seasonal part-time employees.

Pay

Salary range: $40,000 - $50,000 annually, commensurate with experience.

Schedule

Full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
