About the role
The Youth Development Professional (YDP) supports the daily operations and student experience of the Migrant Summer Program. This role focuses on creating a safe, engaging, and structured environment for youth while assisting with academic enrichment, social-emotional development, and recreational programming.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and actively engage a group of youth (ages 5–12) in a safe and structured environment
- Assist the ESL Teacher with classroom support, small group instruction, and activity facilitation
- Support English language development by reinforcing vocabulary, conversation, and comprehension during activities
- Lead and participate in summer camp activities, including games, arts, STEM, and enrichment programming
- Supervise and travel with students on field trips, ensuring safety, participation, and positive behavior
- Build positive relationships with youth, serving as a mentor and role model
- Communicate with students and families as needed, including Spanish-speaking participants
- Implement behavior management strategies aligned with program expectations
- Maintain accurate attendance and assist with program documentation
- Ensure compliance with OCCL licensing and safety standards
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education, human services, or related field preferred
- Experience working with youth in a school, camp, or community-based setting
- Ability to engage and manage groups of children in an active environment
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
- Bilingual candidates fluent in both English and Spanish are highly preferred
- Must be able to pass an FBI clearance, State of Delaware Criminal History Background Check, National and State Sexual Abuse Registry check, and National and State Child Abuse Registry Check per Delacare regulations
- First Aid/CPR Certification, or completion of certification within two months of date of hire
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Maintain a high energy level
- Be comfortable working with children ages 3-12 in varying levels of physical activity
- Frequently lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 25 pounds when preparing rooms for activities
- Typically bends, stoops, walks and sometimes runs on a regular basis while interacting with children in various activities throughout the day
- Ability to perform duties effectively under stressful conditions; ability to make decisions quickly and accurately with tact and impartiality
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Pay
$20 per hour
Schedule
- Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:00am- 6:00pm; up to 40 hours per week.
