Position Overview

The Youth Development Director (Teen Program) leads and oversees the daily planning and implementation of a variety of social, recreational, athletic, educational and cultural programs for pre-teen and teen adolescent youth at their clubhouse. Additionally, the Youth Development Director will integrate culturally relevant, leadership and "What's Next" activities including, but not limited to, L.I.T. programs, Youth of the Year (YOY), and post-secondary education and workforce development initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Program Planning and Implementation: Oversee, plan, coordinate, develop, implement and evaluate a broad range of programs for teens in the areas of Good Character & Citizenship Leadership Development, Academic Success and Career Development, Healthy Lifestyles to include life skills, mental health, the arts, sports and fitness, etc.
• Help oversee LIT and YOY for their clubhouse including events related to YOY and LIT programming. This includes the recruitment and development of members in the YOY program at their clubhouse; supporting them and their needs through the YOY academy and competition. Facilitating the LIT program at the site to ensure grant expectations are being met.
• Encourage and promote diversity awareness and diversity of staff, volunteers, and members.
• Ensure programs/activities respond to member needs and address gender and cultural diversity.
• Work closely with club staff and the rest of the organization to develop and implement programs and activities that meet youth's needs, with special emphasis on career and education development, technology, and leadership development.
• Analyze and review teen center's membership levels and average daily attendance and develop and implement strategies to increase membership and ADA including outreach.
• Plan and take actions required to obtain community and volunteer support.
• Evaluate programming activity and regularly review impact. Implement, review and update regularly action steps and program improvements.
• Plan, implement and participate in special activities (i.e. field trips, camps, etc.) and travel as required.
• Establish and maintain Club program goals and settings that ensure the health and safety of members.
• Consistently follow instructions and observe BGCH policies and procedures.
• Provide on-going feedback and recognition of teens' progress and assist them at meeting designated benchmarks.
• Track and monitor teens' progress and report information appropriately.
• Undertake any other duties that upper management staff might deem necessary to the best interest of the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii.
• Perform all other duties as necessary to ensure the success of programs under his/her jurisdiction.
• Administrative Functions: Assume the role of primary liaison to Teen Center for support staff, responsible for communications and planning, delegating as appropriate.
• Ensure information and other data maintained on programs, membership, etc. are accurate and timely.
• Assist Club Director in helping prepare annual teen program budget and authorizes expenditures up to an approved limit as determined by BGCH.
• Prepare requisitions for supplies, equipment, etc. with the Clubhouse Director or Program Director's approval.
• Prepare and submit required written reports, letters, data tracking, memos, etc., on a timely basis, and in compliance with deadlines, to Clubhouse Director and/or Admin.
• Assist in new member/parent orientation.
• Assist the Program Director/Clubhouse Director with fund-raising activities including but not limited to Youth of the Year, Great Futures Day, Walk in the Country and Clubhouse specific events.
• Attend and sometimes lead scheduled staff meetings.
• Assist with other duties as assigned.
• Supervision, Leadership, Teen Development, Recruitment and Training: Train, monitor and develop staff so that programs are well delivered.
• Monitor program delivery, work with program staff to plan and implement improvements.
• Communicate with club staff, members and partner agencies to ensure understanding of programs opportunities, schedule and plans when outside entities participate in program delivery.
• Help select teen center p/t staff required to deliver programs, help evaluate staff performance and recommend discipline/discharge.
• Provide staff and volunteer orientation, training, supervision, and oversight required for effective program delivery, reporting and outcomes.
• Collaborate with Clubhouse Director to determine staffing levels and hours that best support effective teen center operations and program delivery.
• Train and guide teen program staff to ensure an environment that promotes the physical, social and emotional well-being of youth.
• Monitor program areas and provide constructive feedback to staff with regard to program delivery and member guidance and discipline.
• Plan and implement opportunities to recognize program staff.
• Seek guidance from Clubhouse Director when handling crisis situations; take action to resolve conflicts, disputes and/or concerns of staff, club members, or volunteers.
• Provide clear, consistent and effective communication regarding program and member needs, progress and updates to Clubhouse Director, Program Director, program staff, volunteers, and youth participants.
• Marketing, Community Relations and Collaborative Partnerships: Develop and implement a plan for the recruitment and retention of Teen members.
• Promote, stimulate interest and increase visibility and participation of Club teen members in various club activities and events.
• Oversee, promote and stimulate community and parent interest in Club activities by establishing good community relations.
• Consistently connect and communicate with supervisors, staff teams, youth, parents and other stakeholders in a timely manner to ensure strong relationships and rapport are built and maintained for the betterment of the clubs' teens.
• Increase visibility of Club programs via posting of daily schedule, announcements of upcoming events and the dissemination of timely information for the development of advertising and promotion through mailings, fliers, social media and media releases.
• Develop an annual plan to collaborate with other youth-serving organizations in the community, including principals of schools, community associations/neighborhood boards, and police department personnel.
• Collaborate with community partners to support teen center initiatives.
• Represent both the Teen center and BGCH in their community ensuring that the interests of the youth are protected and supported.
• Support cross-functional initiatives across departments.
• Ensure that the teen program areas are safe, well-ventilated and well-lit and that club equipment is maintained in good working condition.
• Oversee and take action to ensure teen program areas are safe, attractive, well-maintained and clean.
• Supervise the care and maintenance of the youth program equipment and facility.
• Maintain inventory of program supplies and equipment.

Qualifications

• Four-year degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.
• A minimum of two years' work experience in a youth-serving organization planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people, or equivalent experience.
• Possess a current CPR and First Aid certificate (or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment).
• Ability to work with teens and youth, including "at-risk" youth.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with multi-ethnic cultures and people with different levels of education and socioeconomic status.
• Communicates clearly, consistently and effectively the needs, challenges, and progress of their teen members and programs to their Clubhouse Director and other designated staff.
• Ability to work independently and well with others on a team.
• Ability to organize activities and documents in a professional manner.
• Possesses emotional maturity and patience to work with and develop teens.
• Ability to operate a personal computer, using word processing, spreadsheet, and database management.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of agencies and community organizations.
• Must pass a background check, drug screening, and complete all applicable pre-employment requirements to meet organizational standards.

Schedule

Monday–Friday (40 hours/week)

Compensation

$21.00/hour. Now Offering a $400/Month Recruitment Incentive! Eligible candidates hired into qualifying FULL-TIME positions at participating Kauaʻi clubhouses may qualify for a temporary monthly stipend. Must reside 20+ miles from assigned clubhouse. Eligibility requirements apply.
