About the Role

To perform radiographic exams across all modalities covered under the staff radiographer's license. Monitor and evaluate patient care quality and efficiency as part of a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring care is appropriate for the age population served, as defined in the department's scope of service.

Responsibilities

  • Performs radiologic procedures in accordance with unit-based standards of practice:
    • Adjusts X-ray equipment and sets exposure factors such as time and distance.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques and protocols.
    • Transfers, positions, and instructs patients regarding procedures.
    • Produces high-quality radiographic films.
    • Positions patients and operates equipment to obtain reliable and informational data.
    • Transports patients to the radiographic room and prepares/maintains the room following safety guidelines.
    • Uses immobilization devices to optimize imaging while ensuring patient safety and comfort.
    • Assesses and interprets patient data to meet age-specific healthcare needs.
  • Demonstrates correct and safe operation of radiographic equipment:
    • Complies with radiation safety procedures, including shielding patients, staff, and visitors.
    • Uses monitoring devices and adheres to room technique protocols.
    • Prepares and administers contrast media (oral, IV, lower GI, retrograde).
  • Practices effective communication to enhance teamwork and quality of care:
    • Explains procedures to patients to reduce anxiety and gain cooperation.
    • Recognizes and responds appropriately to adverse reactions.
    • Demonstrates age-specific communication awareness.
  • Conducts CT scans under the direction of a Radiologist:
    • Positions and prepares patients for scans using correct techniques.
    • Sets and operates scanning equipment to produce high-quality diagnostic data.
    • Maintains the CT room and equipment, monitors supply inventories.
  • Maintains standards in accordance with radiation protection:
    • Performs daily quality control measures and testing.
    • Maintains proper documentation of quality control measures.

Requirements

  • Current Louisiana licensure to perform as a radiographer.
  • X-ray registration with interest in cross-training into CT.
  • CT certification preferred.
  • National certification preferred.
  • Approved training in computerized tomography preferred.

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Adherence to HIPAA regulations, including handling medical records, patient demographics, lab/radiology results, and patient financial information.
  • Adherence to safety practices, including incident reporting, handling of wastes, PPE, exposure control, patient identification, and monitoring patients during procedures.

Physical Demands

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. Physical demands include:

  • Walking or standing to a significant degree.
  • Sitting most of the time but may entail pushing/pulling of arm/leg controls.
  • Working at a production-rate pace, which may involve constant stress and strain.
