About the role

This position will operate under general direction, overseeing the operational activities of the City’s Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. It involves ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal agencies, supervising staff, and managing safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and coordinate programs, projects, and activities related to wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of facility operations staff, scheduling shifts and providing coaching and training.
  • Promote a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement, leading the WWTP safety committee.
  • Serve as management lead on safety initiatives, ensuring compliance with confined space entry, chemical handling, operational safety, and PPE regulations.
  • Assume Manager roles during absences, ensuring compliance with NPDES permit and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate with personnel and external organizations, representing the City in regulatory communications and inspections.
  • Support the WWTP Manager in regulatory matters, providing technical expertise and assisting in policy development.
  • Operate computer and office equipment, maintain plant instrumentation, and drive to various sites for inspections.

Requirements

  • Education and Experience: Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Water and Wastewater Technology, Civil Engineering, or related field AND five years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, including two years of staff supervisory responsibility.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid Driver’s license, State of Washington Driver’s License, Washington State Group III Wastewater Operator Certification, and ability to obtain Group IV within one year.
  • Physical Abilities: Close vision, far vision, side vision, depth perception, night vision, and color vision; ability to lift up to 50 lbs; ability to sit, stand, walk, and use stairs; ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

Qualifications

  • Results of a pre-employment drug screening are required.

Pay

Generally starts between $9,515.00 and $10,490.50 per month, with placement within the full wage scale based on qualifications and experience.
