About the Role

Consultants are responsible for providing one-on-one or group consulting in a supportive environment to students in all disciplines, in order to engage and empower them to become more competent academic and professional writers. Teaching in a one-on-one setting is integral to the position, although there is no requirement for teaching beyond the duties of the Writing Center.

This is a part-time, non-union support staff position at the Western Campus, reporting to the Associate Dean of Liberal Arts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one or group writing consultation to students across all disciplines.
  • Engage and empower students to improve their academic and professional writing skills.
  • Explain writing concepts and study strategies effectively to ensure student success.
  • Work comfortably with a diverse student population in a supportive and encouraging learning environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university (English degrees preferred).
  • Demonstrated writing consultation experience in a tutorial or instructional setting.
  • Experience working with community college students.

  • Working knowledge of writing concepts, practices, and procedures with the ability to apply them to varied situations.
  • Ability to explain concepts effectively and communicate study strategies to ensure academic success.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and foster a team environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to develop productive customer relationships.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with discretion.
  • Sensitivity to appropriately respond to the needs of a diverse community.

Physical Demands / Working Conditions

The work is performed in a normal, professional office environment with adequate lighting, heating, and ventilation. The position involves:

  • Sitting comfortably to perform duties, including repetitive motions with hands/fingers (e.g., typing, using a computer mouse).
  • Walking, standing, bending, stooping, and carrying various items and equipment.
  • Travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the worksite, which may require additional walking and standing.

Pay

$20.91 per hour (set rate for this part-time, non-bargaining unit position).
