WordPress Website Developer

Energy Design Engineers (EDE) is seeking a motivated Oakland University student to help improve and update our company website. This is a great opportunity for a student studying web development, information technology, computer science, digital marketing, graphic design, or a related field who already has some hands-on experience working with WordPress websites.

About the role

Our website is already established, and the revised website copy, page recommendations, and requested changes have already been developed. We are not looking for someone to create an entirely new website or develop our marketing strategy. We need someone who can take an existing improvement plan and efficiently implement those changes within WordPress.

Responsibilities

• Updating and reorganizing existing WordPress pages
• Replacing website copy with revised content already provided
• Adding, removing, and rearranging website sections
• Improving page layout and visual consistency
• Updating buttons, links, calls-to-action, images, and forms
• Creating or modifying service and project pages
• Improving the website’s mobile presentation
• Making basic SEO updates such as page titles, meta descriptions, headings, image alt text, and internal links
• Helping identify and correct website formatting or usability issues
• Testing changes before they are published
• Assisting with ongoing website improvements as needed

Our website is built using WordPress and is hosted through SiteGround.

Qualifications

We highly recommend that applicants have previous experience using WordPress to build, maintain, or make substantial changes to a website.

Skills

• Previous hands-on WordPress experience
• Basic understanding of website design and page layout
• Ability to work independently from written instructions
• Strong attention to detail
• Good written communication skills
• Basic knowledge of SEO principles is helpful
• Familiarity with website hosting or SiteGround is helpful, but not required
• Ability to troubleshoot minor website problems is a plus

We care more about demonstrated ability and willingness to learn than years of experience. Applicants who have created or worked on websites are encouraged to include links to examples of their work.

Pay

$18–$30 per hour, depending on experience and capabilities

Schedule

Approximately 5–20 hours per week, depending on the student’s availability and the amount of website work underway. The schedule can be structured around the student’s class schedule.

This is not an internship where you will spend weeks observing someone else work. You will be given real website projects with clearly defined changes, and you will be able to see the results of your work published on an operating company’s website. For the right student, the position could also provide ongoing part-time website work as new projects, case studies, articles, and website improvements are developed.
