About the role

This position involves leading and overseeing a team of workers to ensure efficient and proper completion of tasks. The role requires demonstrating work methods, managing resources, and maintaining production records. The incumbent will also fabricate, repair, and install storage and shipping items using various materials and tools.

Responsibilities

• Ensures work is done properly and efficiently by passing instructions from supervisors to workers and demonstrating proper work methods.
• Ensures equipment, materials, tools, and supplies are fully functional and available when needed.
• Manages workload distribution to ensure all workers are fully utilized.
• Answers workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directions.
• Fabricates, repairs, and installs storage and shipping items such as boxes, crates, pallets, dividers, skids, and storage bins using wood, wood composites, steel bracing, and packing materials.
• Spot checks completed work for compliance with supervisor’s instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.
• Maintains written records of production, work hours, costing, attendance, and other data, potentially using a computer.
• Orients and trains new employees.
• Makes suggestions for performance awards and provides information on potential performance problems.
• Works from local process specifications, blueprints, sketches, drawings, or verbal instructions to manufacture wood crates, boxes, and skids.
• Determines requirements for special jobs, including material selection, box/crate design, bracing, strapping, packing, labeling, and preparing items for shipment or storage.
• Uses proper handling equipment for transfer and ensures necessary cleanup of the work site.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Non-Critical Sensitive with Secret Access security requirement; appointment subject to a favorable suitability or fitness determination.
• Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
• Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
• Bargaining Unit Status: Yes.
• Pre-Employment Physical: Required.
• Must possess or obtain a REAL ID or other acceptable identification documents for accessing federal facilities.
• Position may be used to fill various shifts within DLA Distribution Puget Sound, WA.
• Must obtain and maintain licenses/certifications required by the installation, federal, state, and local laws, including:
  • Valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
  • Valid state driver’s license/certification to operate government vehicles.
  • Required hazardous materials handling certifications.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated based on the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. While no specific length of time or experience is required, you must meet the screen-out element and demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the necessary knowledge and skills. Emphasis is placed on the quality of experience rather than the duration. The required screen-out element for this position is:

• Ability to Lead (Screen-Out Element): Instruct other workers on less complex methods, refer to manuals to answer questions related to material identification and examination, and adhere to all safety standards.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations.

Physical Effort

• Performs tiring work involving standing for the majority of the work shift.
• Lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted; heavier items (up to 90 pounds) with assistance from other workers or lifting devices.
• Requires stooping, bending, or working in cramped positions.
• Extensive use of arms and hands to operate hand tools, portable equipment, machinery, or manage construction materials and parts.

Working Conditions

• Works in shop areas or exposed outdoor environments, potentially involving uncomfortable heat, cold, drafty, or damp conditions.
• Exposure to work-generated dust, excessive noise levels, and potential throat or nose irritation.
• Risk of skin abrasions, nicks, cuts, or blisters from handling materials, equipment, and tools.
• Required to wear mandatory protective safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs, respirators, or gloves.
