Wood Worker (Carton Making Machine Operator)
About the role
This position involves helping plans, constructs, and repairs a variety of supply, shipping, and storage containers and similar items. Duties also include selecting appropriate materials, custom packing items that don't fit standard containers, and operating and maintaining various tools and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Selects proper type/grade of wood/wood substitute from a few grades of soft pine, fir, plywood, and masonite.
- Selects containers, protective devices, cushioning materials, methods, and techniques needed for packing a variety of tools, parts, equipment, and other items.
- Custom packs various items that cannot be made to fit into containers of standard size.
- Applies highly detailed knowledge of cleaning, drying, remediation and preservation methods to material.
- Operates and maintains variety of power tools, hand tools, weight handling equipment, kiln and material handling equipment.
- Performs detailed record keeping, both hand-written and on computer systems.
Requirements

- Tour of duty: Set schedule.

- Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, where reciprocity cannot be applied; unfavorably adjudicated background checks will be grounds for removal.

- Must obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
- Must obtain and maintain licenses and/or certifications required by the installation, federal, state, and local laws.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license/certification to operate government vehicles.
Qualifications
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations. The required ability or potential to perform the job is emphasized, not necessarily the length of time. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.
Physical Effort
- Uses power and manual tools while performing repetitive, tiring work for long periods of time.
- Frequent standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and arm movement is required.
- Sometimes works in cramped or awkward positions.
- Continuous lifting, carrying, and using tools and materials that weigh 45 pounds or over.
- Sometimes heavier weights are lifted and moved with assistance of others or lifting devices such as floor hoists or cranes.
- Operates MHE such as fork lift, tractor, pick up truck and/or other general purpose vehicle.
Working Conditions
- Frequently exposed to sawdust, as well as other nose and lung irritations.
- Frequent exposure to loud noises from power saws, hammers, etc.
- Sometimes exposed to cuts from flying wooden particles, nails, fasteners, etc.
- May be required to wear protective eyeglasses, ear devices, or gloves.
