Women, Infants, and Children Team Leader (Nutritionist)-61007699

The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition Services Coordinator supervises and evaluates nutrition services at the Health Department, providing both normal and therapeutic nutrition services for the WIC Program.

Responsibilities

• Management and Supervision:
  • Recruit, hire, orient, train, and supervise Nutritionists II and other Competent Professional Authority (CPA) staff providing WIC services.
  • Provide nutrition oversight, program-level support, and management evaluation preparation.
  • Conduct reviews and audits for other clinics as determined.
  • Perform quality assurance activities such as staff observations, class reviews, and program audits.
  • Communicate updated WIC policies and procedures with Nutritionist II staff.
  • Oversee nutrition education materials.
  • Provide consultation and technical assistance on normal nutrition, health promotion, and disease prevention to healthcare teams and the community.
  • Conduct outreach to providers and the community to increase WIC participation.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary WIC team activities, including clinic operations, caseload monitoring, and outreach.
  • Collaborate with program staff to enhance service integration and quality.
• Assessment and Certification:
  • Complete WIC certifications and mid-certifications, including health history, nutrition assessment, anthropometrics, immunization screening, hemoglobin/hematocrit testing, risk evaluation, food package prescription, documentation, and referrals.
  • Provide participants with WIC program information and benefit redemption guidance.
  • Schedule WIC appointments.
  • Perform hemoglobin controls in accordance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and agency standards.
• Nutrition Education:
  • Provide participant-centered nutrition education, counseling, and follow-up.
  • Develop mutual nutrition and physical activity goals with clients during certification and mid-certification.
  • Refer clients to web-based nutrition education.
  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate group nutrition education classes using the facilitated learning process.
  • Document nutrition education contacts.
• Food Packages, Special Formulas, and Reports:
  • Prescribe, update, and explain food packages.
  • Tailor formula packages for partially breastfeeding infants.
  • Document changes to the WIC food package in SCWIC.
  • Issue benefits during certification, mid-certification, and nutrition education encounters.
  • Approve List I Formulas.
  • Assist families with infants on contract and List I formulas, including education, dispensing, and monitoring.
  • Refer participants on List II and metabolic formulas to the registered dietitian per WIC guidelines.
  • Pull and complete reports in SCWIC.
• Breastfeeding Promotion and Support:
  • Provide breastfeeding promotion and support to pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  • Screen and refer pregnant and breastfeeding women and infants to breastfeeding staff per Referral Guidelines.
  • Issue and monitor breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies.
• Professional Development and Training:
  • Update professional skills and knowledge to ensure quality nutrition services.
  • Participate in continuing education opportunities, WIC trainings, and agency-required programs.
  • Maintain certifications required for the position, including Certified Lactation Consultant credential if applicable.
• Essential Duties and Emergency Response:
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned, including required travel.
  • Respond as directed during emergencies, which may occur outside normal work hours.

Requirements

• State Minimum Requirements:
  • A bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, public health, family and consumer sciences, health education, or a related degree with an emphasis on nutrition from an institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
• Agency Additional Requirements:
  • A bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, or community nutrition and experience in a clinical, public health, or institutional setting; or
  • A bachelor’s degree in any field and registration by the American Dietetics Association and experience in a clinical, public health, or institutional setting.
  • Some positions require registration with the American Dietetics Association and a valid license from the South Carolina Panel for Dietetics.
