About the role
This position is based in Allen, Nebraska and involves maintaining and troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment in wind turbines. The role requires a proactive approach to safety, process improvement, and mentoring lower-level technicians.
Responsibilities
- Complete all scheduled maintenance for mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment to maximize generation.
- Install, test, maintain, and troubleshoot minor components and assist with major components.
- Perform current and voltage calculations as necessary.
- Initiate reports and records associated with maintenance and repairs.
- Complete Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and job-specific documentation for safe maintenance and repairs.
- Proactively identify improvement opportunities for job-appropriate processes and procedures.
- Perform data collection and prepare reports to meet requirements.
- Mentor lower-level technicians.
- Perform balance of plant and switchyard work as required.
- Support regional wind maintenance activities as needed.
- Assist with QA/QC activities and work with Technical Support for proactive repairs.
- Comply with all HSEQ policies and procedures (ISO9001/ISO14001/ISO18001).
- Assist with inventory control as needed and support BOP activities.
- Participate in on-the-job and off-site training, completing all required training satisfactorily and on time.
- Operate a motor vehicle with a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Work around low- and medium-voltage equipment and respond to site emergencies 24/7 as needed.
- Work weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
- Work in hot/cold ambient weather conditions and climb turbine towers (100+ meters) 5–15 times per week.
- Perform physically demanding tasks, including working at heights of 300+ feet, in confined spaces, and lifting 50 lbs. daily, sometimes overhead.
- Wear PPE such as arc flash suits, facemasks, and high-voltage gloves for extended periods.
- Work in hazardous conditions, including exposure to energized electrical equipment and rotating machinery.
- Travel domestically up to 25%.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Technical Engineering (or foreign equivalent) or a related field and 8 years of experience in the job offered or a wind energy-related occupation.
- Alternatively, no degree and 12 years of experience in the job offered or a wind energy-related position.
- Demonstrable experience with the following:
- Using Digital Multi-Meter (DMM) electrical test equipment in Acciona turbines to test motors, relays, breakers, capacitors, PTs, and IGBTs.
- Using Meggers electrical test equipment in Acciona turbines to test generators, stator and rotor, Indar and ABB slip rings, and motors.
- Strong knowledge of electrical theory and troubleshooting techniques in:
- Can Circuit
- Turk Header Circuit
- Moventas and Wynergy Gearboxes
- Indar, ABB, and Siemens Generators
- Converters, Inverters, IGBTs
- Cooling Systems
- Slip Ring
- Proficient knowledge of SQL Server software and facility management/reporting systems, including PI Vision for running trends and troubleshooting.
- Proficient knowledge of computerized diagnostic and troubleshooting tools, specifically SCADA for running trends and troubleshooting using work instructions.
- Familiarity with wind farm operations, maintenance, and electronic testing equipment (e.g., voltage testers, amp clamps, hydraulic torque equipment, alignment tools, and various hand and power tools).
- Working knowledge of crane and rigging requirements and heavy equipment for facility maintenance.
- Ability to pass a physical fitness test upon hiring.
- Must meet the weight requirement of safety gear (310 lbs. or less).
