Troubleshooting and Repair

Performs work to trouble shoot electrical systems (ie, PLC’s, VFD and PWM Drives, servo motors and related systems), understanding schematics and blueprints, troubleshooting mechanical as well as electrical problems, replacing or fixing components, and conducting regular maintenance checks to ensure that electrical/mechanical systems function smoothly and efficiently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Trains and assists in the repair and maintenance of all electrical systems, including programmable controllers, PLC's and Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi and Fanuc equipment within the plant.
  • Receives wiring diagrams, drawings, specification and instructions covering scheduled and emergency repair, installation and inspection work to be done.
  • Plans & performs work requiring a thorough knowledge of electrical and electronic theory & principles, wiring specifications, codes, properties of various materials, and principles of operation and application of electronic equipment.
  • Install, repair, modification, preventative maintenance, etc.., and simplifying, adjusting any and all electrical units, electronic controls, components, and related wiring.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and report any hazards that may compromise a safe workplace.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Education, And Abilities

  • Experience in the trade working with industrial automation or a degree in Industrial Maintenance Technology or related field.
  • Extensive experience in Industrial Automation including six-axis robotics, preferably Fanuc and/or Motoman.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings (Electrical, Mechanical, Hydraulic and Pneumatic).
  • Extensive experience with Electrical and electronic tools and gauges.
  • Knowledge of hand tools, drill press, lathe and mill, electric drills, Welding (Mig), pipe threading machine, acetylene torch, soldering iron, etc.
  • General manufacturing experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical tools, combination squares, precision measuring equipment, electronic test equipment, along with various other tools common to this trade.

Physical Requirements

  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle and manipulate small tools, electrical components, and wires with precision.
  • Strength and Endurance: Ability to lift heavy equipment or parts (up to 50 lbs or more) to install or repair machinery.
  • Stamina: Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, potentially for long shifts (up to 12 hours), while staying alert and focused on safety.
  • Vision and Hand-Eye Coordination: Excellent vision or corrective vision to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and component labels.
  • Climbing and Reaching: Comfort with climbing ladders or scaffolding to access equipment.
  • Flexibility and Agility: Ability to crawl into tight spaces or work in awkward positions to repair or maintain electrical systems.

Mental And Cognitive Requirements

  • Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting: Ability to quickly diagnose and troubleshoot electrical issues, including interpreting wiring diagrams and using diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, circuit testers).
  • Attention to Detail: Precision is critical in electrical work, especially when dealing with complex wiring systems, safety concerns, and compliance with codes.
  • Technical Knowledge and Skills: Strong understanding of electrical theory, wiring, circuits, and manufacturing equipment.
  • Follow Procedures: Consistently following maintenance manuals, safety instructions, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Decision-Making and Judgment: Ability to make critical decisions in high-pressure situations (e.g., when equipment is down and production is halted).
  • Multitasking and Time Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, balancing routine inspections, scheduled maintenance, and urgent repairs.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with other team members, management, and operators to report issues, explain repairs, and provide status updates.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changes in technology, production processes, and maintenance tools and techniques.
