About the Role
Under the direction of the Wellness Director, the Wellness Coach Level II will build personalized relationships to support all members through our signature programs. This role performs responsibilities in accordance with the policies, organizational competencies, non-negotiables, mission, and values of the YMCA of Metro Atlanta.
Responsibilities
- Monitor the wellness center floor, assist members as needed, and enforce wellness center policies.
- Clean, maintain, and check equipment; report repair needs under supervisor direction.
- Apply Metro Atlanta YMCA risk and safety guidelines, best practices, and branch emergency procedures consistently.
- Promote, monitor, evaluate, and ensure wellness programs run smoothly with a high level of service.
- Stay updated on current wellness program issues.
- Complete the following trainings within 60 days of hire:
- Coach Approach training.
- YUSA foundational courses for Health & Wellness:
- Orientation to Healthy Living
- Foundations of Listen First
- Principles of Member Health & Wellness
- Wellness Center at the Y
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Maintain all national and YUSA wellness certifications, including 10 continuing education credits (CECs) every two years.
- Renew BLS certification every 2 years.
- Secure a substitute coach if unable to work an assigned shift; substitute requests must be approved in advance.
- Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and facility/equipment orientations.
- Assist in all aspects of the YMCA and its community as needed.
- Participate in and partner with wellness cabinet activities.
- Maintain and report incident/accident paperwork.
- Establish and maintain a minimum caseload of active members in The Coach Approach Program:
- Full-time coaches: 100 members
- Part-time coaches (20+ hours/week): 50 members
- Part-time coaches (<20 hours/week): caseload adjusted proportionately (e.g., 25 members for 10 hours/week).
- Be available to work at least two, four-hour shifts per week.
- Adhere to strength training and nutrition guidelines in alignment with Y-USA/ACE and ACSM guidelines.
- Refrain from diagnosing injuries, offering medical advice, or endorsing commercial health products, including nutritional supplements and pain relievers.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Knowledge of general weightlifting, health/wellness concepts, and ability to demonstrate use of wellness-related equipment.
- Knowledge of fitness-related issues, including aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise, nutrition, benefits of exercise, injury prevention, and The Coach Approach.
- Full access to Y-Exchange (yexchange.org), YLINK, and Metro Atlanta YMCA Workday account.
- Obtain YMCA/ACE online certification and supplemental courses required by Y-USA and Y-Metro Atlanta within 60 days of hire, including:
- Wellness Coaching 101
- Specialty Training
- Maintain certifications by uploading continuing education credits via Y-Exchange prior to expiration.
- Possess current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; renew every 2 years and upload updated licenses via Y-Exchange.
- Visual and cognitive abilities to utilize computer-based and written materials for job responsibilities.
- High degree of human relations skills; ability to facilitate member interaction and socialization.
- Working knowledge of computers: MS Word, MS Excel, and database management.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and problem-solve.
- Effective time-management skills.
- Strong customer service skills and personal commitment to service and hospitality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, physical education, exercise psychology, behavioral science, or a health-related field.
Working Conditions
- Ergonomics: Sitting, bending, stooping, standing.
- 15% repetitive keyboard work.
- Demonstrating equipment use.
- Lifting up to 45 pounds.
- Exposure to noise levels averaging 90 decibels (music) over an eight-hour day.

- Pass a pre-employment background check, including criminal record check, drug screening, motor vehicle record (MVR), and reference check.
- Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.
