Welding Repair Technician TA

About the Role

This position assists welder repair technicians and tradesmen as needed, maintains cleanliness and order on assigned job sites, and provides input on product and process improvement. The role involves following written and verbal instructions, adhering to Austal USA guidelines and procedures, and complying with safety and environmental regulations.

May be assigned to work any shift and additional tasks outside the craft as required.

Responsibilities

• Receive and carry out written and verbal instructions.
• Learn as an on-the-job trainee.
• Assist welder repair technicians and tradesmen as needed.
• Maintain cleanliness and order on assigned job sites.
• Provide input and feedback on product and process improvement.
• Start shift on time.
• Follow Entry to Confined Spaces procedure if working in voids.
• Comply with company, federal, state, and local safety and environmental rules.

Requirements

• 18 years of age or older at time of application.
• Able to provide proof of US Person Status.
• No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date.
• No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date.
• Willing to submit to a drug screen and background check.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in a shipyard or manufacturing industry is preferred.
• Basic understanding of electrical principles preferred.
• Basic electronic technical school training desired.

Physical Requirements

The role involves exposure to humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, extreme heat, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and very loud noise levels (+90 dB).

• Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites.
• Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.
• Occasionally required to sit.
• Ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel.
• Perform prolonged standing.
• Ability to turn head and body at the waist from side to side.
• Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis and up to 20lbs on a frequent basis.
• Ability to climb stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps safely.
• Work at heights above 12’ using ladders, scaffolding, or man lifts.
• Work at a variety of levels (e.g., waist, eye, overhead).
• Demonstrate safe and appropriate use of tools and equipment.
• Good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles.
• Sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment.
• Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards.
• Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures.
• Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods.
• Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands.
• Adequate visual skills.
• Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, out, to the side, and down.
• Ability to perceive attributes of objects (size, shape, temperature, texture) by touch.
