Welding Engineer III

Assures production has the necessary Welding Procedures to proceed with welding on Commercial, Government, and Facilities contracts by analyzing the needs, developing documentation, and publicizing the results for intended usage by the production welding departments.

Responsibilities

• Prepares all welding procedures meeting ASME, AWS, ABS, and NAVSEA code requirements.
• Establishes welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-heating requirements, involving use of special fabrication methods and welding of critical joints.
• Improves existing welding procedures through review of customer requirements, existing fabrication techniques, and new market technology.
• Evaluates new developments in the welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.
• Contacts personnel of other agencies, engineering personnel, or clients to exchange ideas, information, or offer technical advice concerning welding matters.
• Develops Procedure Qualification Records dictated by production needs and forecasting as directed by the Director - Quality in accordance with applicable codes.
• Optimizes welding processes, procedures, and equipment for minimum fabrication costs.
• Evaluates suppliers' welding procedures for technical adequacy and code conformance for specific job applications.
• Obtains internal and/or external interpretation and modification to all welding codes used as production necessitates.
• Manages database for welders, tackers, brazers, welding, and brazing operators' performance qualifications relative to original certification and quarterly recertification.
• Must be willing to travel between Vigor Ship Repair Facilities when necessary (Portland and Seattle).
• Conducts training for metal joining trades in code and procedure requirements as required by contract.
• Evaluates skills and measures results of production workers, recognizes success, and coaches individuals and teams where performance improvement is warranted.
• Provides feedback to the relevant Project Manager.
• Has experience with NAVSEA procedures and can teach required 248 classes.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or related field.
• Minimum three (3) years of experience in an Engineering department welding capacity.
• Minimum three (3) years of experience in ASME or AISC quality programs.
• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by participation in professional societies, attending educational workshops, and reviewing professional publications.
• Minimum fifteen (15) years of experience in craft welding is preferred.
• NDT certification in accordance with ASNT or CWI certification is recommended.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, for constant interaction with all departments and employee levels, and outside customers.
• Well-organized, detail-oriented, and customer (internal and external) focused self-starter.
• Ability to read and comprehend work specifications, work orders, blueprints, contracts, and technical publications.
• Working knowledge of shipyard production and administrative procedures, and government and industrial regulations.
• Ability to use Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, Access, and database programs.
• Specific knowledge of quality system standards.
• Comfortable with public speaking and conducting training classes.

$110,000 – $128,000

Schedule

• Primarily 40% office environment, 60% production areas in yard and aboard ships.
• May require working more than 8-hour shifts and weekend work.
• Must be able to frequently bend, squat, crawl, twist, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Must be able to climb inclined stairways and vertical ladders, enter confined areas and tanks, and work at heights.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Work is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced office setting with moderate to loud noise levels from production activity in the shipyard.
• Exposure to all weather conditions, noise, dusts, and odors while in production areas.
• Local and out-of-town travel may be required.
