About the Role
A Plate Structural Welder raises, places, and unites girders, columns, and other structural-steel members to form completed structures or frameworks.
Responsibilities
- Work safely around hazards associated with the construction field.
- Use hand, electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic tools safely.
- Read and interpret plans, isometrics, arrangement drawings, details, specifications, and blueprints to make decisions based on measurable criteria.
- Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings.
- Secure components using bolts, clamps, and tack welding.
- Prepare material for welding by cutting or grinding using pipe cutters, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, or grinder.
- Set material in stands, racks, hoists, etc., for welding.
- Set up equipment and weld parts using arc, gas-shielded arc, or gas welding equipment.
- Repair products by dismantling, straightening, and reshaping; reassemble using cutting torch, straightening press, and hand tools.
- Complete welding tests as specified:
- SMAW Process E 7018: 3 positions (2G, 3G, 4G) on ½” thick carbon steel plates (Horizontal, Uphill Vertical, Overhead).
- Flux Core Process E 71T-1 wire: 3 positions (2G, 3G, 4G) on ½” carbon steel plates (Uphill Vertical, Overhead).
Requirements
- Three (3) years minimum heavy industrial field experience as a Welder.
- Ability to identify welding techniques (TIG, MIG, Arc) and understand properties of various metals and heat effects.
- Completion of welding certification(s) required by company and/or client.
- Must have a locking toolbox and necessary tools to perform the job.
- Must successfully complete all pre-hire requirements.
Physical/Site Requirements
- Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 45 pounds.
- Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
- Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with age.
- Work up to a 12-hour shift in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions.
- Climb and maintain balance on steel frameworks, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
- PPE footwear and prescription safety glasses or eye shields required.
