WELDER LEADER (PIPE EXPERT)
About the role
You will serve as a WELDER LEADER (PIPE EXPERT) in the STRUCTURAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD. The incumbent of this position will serve as an Expert Welder leading a group to ensure work assignments are completed. This position is located in the Structural Shop (Shop 26).
Qualifications
- Ability to modify welding procedures by altering factors such as voltage, amperage, preheat, inter-bead, inter-pass, post heat, temperatures of the metals, and length of time between successive passes of the welding rod or electrode.
- Welding with experimental base metals, electrodes, filler metals, fluxes, shielding, and shielding gases.
- Ability to recognize possible safety hazards and take steps to eliminate or control hazards such as damaged cables, connecting fittings, or equipment.
- Using special techniques such as flowing insert rings to achieve internal finishes within prescribed tolerances.
- Ability to consider elements such as arc stability, degree of penetration, surface tension, and viscosity of the flux and shielding slag to determine adequacy of the weld performance.
Skills
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.
