Welder - Job Shop
Overview
As a Welder I, II, or III for Keel Midwest, you will utilize the main welding processes (GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, SMAW), oxy-fuel cutting, carbon arc cutting, and plasma arc cutting to manufacture components from blueprints and Welding Procedure Specifications. Levels I, II, and III are expected to have different levels of responsibility and skill.
Job Functions
- Level I: Show basic understanding of welding and cutting processes, basic weld symbols and blueprint reading, and general hand tool knowledge. Maintain supplies and equipment, and set parameters with guidance.
- Level II: Understand AWS requirements, fully comprehend Welding Procedure Specifications, and have advanced skills in welding and cutting processes. Proficient in cutting straight lines, shapes, and bevels with minimal supervision.
- Level III: Display expert skills in one welding process and cutting processes, advanced blueprint reading, and troubleshooting equipment issues. Maintain low rework rate and assist/train Level I and II welders.
Physical Demands
Frequent standing, sitting, bending, stooping, and twisting. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. without mechanical assistance. Work environment includes fumes from welding, debris, moving equipment, and high temperatures.
Work Environment
Typical welding/fabrication shop floor with fumes from welding, risk of eye flash, and exposure to debris/particulates, moving equipment, and high temperatures. Required personal protective equipment includes welding helmet, eye protection, ear protection, and safety toed boots.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Technical training or equivalent experience:
- Less than one year for Level I
- Two years for Level II
- Five years or more for Level III
- Must be able to follow instructions and demonstrate willingness to learn, work as part of a team, and accept constructive criticism.

Pay and Schedule
Day shift 6:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday - Friday. 16% night shift premium available Monday - Thursday 5:00 pm-5:30 am.
Skills
Basic understanding of welding and cutting processes, weld symbols, blueprint reading, and hand tools. Advanced knowledge of welding processes and cutting techniques, including proficiency in cutting straight lines, shapes, and bevels. Ability to troubleshoot and correct welding equipment issues, efficient use of measuring equipment, and conversion between fractions, decimals, and units. Knowledge of metallurgical effects of welding, including distortion and contamination.
