Welder II

About the role

Under the direction and supervision of the Department Production Manager and in cooperation with the Production Supervisor and Production Lead, weld metal components with welding equipment to fit and join, fabricate, and/or repair heavy and large mechanical products per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all safety rules and perform work at a quality level.
• Read and understand assigned blueprints prior to starting a project.
• Participate in process and product development and improvement programs.
• Accurately inspect metal prior to welding to ensure clean welds.
• Perform grinding operations that comply with Astec’s standards.
• Support team by providing an efficient layout of the plant’s equipment to ensure proper welding.
• Layout of plant equipment for welding to ensure proper welding of metal parts.
• Safely perform MIG, TIG, stick welding, and arc gouging, including passing required tests.
• Safely perform gang-welding techniques (do’s and don’ts).
• Safely weld vertical, flat, and overhead with both MIG and stick.
• Inspect metal prior to welding for smoothness and acceptability; clean welds to presentable state (grinding operations).
• Complete Permit Required Confined Space Entry training.
• Work with Fitters on proper assembly of equipment.
• Inspect welds for quality and proper weld.
• Keep work area clean and neat.
• Ensure welding machine settings are appropriate for work to be performed.
• Safely use cranes and forklifts.
• Follow PPE requirements for welding, including hood and filter shades and arm/body protection.
• Read and understand weld symbols.
• Select proper rods or wires to perform the welding job.
• Test all hot oil piping for leaks and perform welding-related repairs; safely use air hose, pressure regulator, and squirt bottle for inspection.
• Maintain welding machines by keeping them clean and changing liners in the welding guns.
• Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
• Follow proper safety rules and procedures at all times.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Trade school or community college course work preferred.
• 2+ years of experience with heavy equipment production line welding.
• Computer experience desired, particularly the ability to use a mouse and locate/open/close programs/files.
• Knowledge and ability to perform all Grinder tasks required.
• Ability to properly and safely MIG weld, stick weld, and arc gouging required.
• Ability to read and understand weld symbols required.

Work Environment

Manufacturing Environment: Shop manufacturing environment exposures include moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions, and exposure to the risk of electric shock. The employee may occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times, consistent with an industrial assembly facility, and may require hearing protection.
