About the role

Under the direction and supervision of the Production Supervisor and Weld Lead, weld metal components with welding equipment to fit and join, fabricate, and/or repair heavy and large custom mechanical products per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all safety rules and perform work at a quality level.
  • Read and understand assigned blueprints prior to starting a project.
  • Participate in process and product development and improvement programs.
  • Accurately inspect metal prior to welding to ensure clean welds.
  • Perform grinding operations that comply with Astec’s standards.
  • Support team by providing an efficient layout of the plant's equipment to ensure proper welding.
  • Layout of plant equipment for welding to ensure proper welding of metal parts.
  • Safely perform MIG welding, including passing required test(s).
  • Inspect metal prior to welding for smoothness and acceptability; clean welds to presentable state (grinding operations).
  • Inspect welds for quality and proper weld.
  • Perform layouts, cutting, and fitting of material.
  • Use welding equipment to burn and cut through materials.
  • Keep work area clean and neat.
  • Ensure welding machine settings are appropriate for work to be performed.
  • Safely use cranes and forklifts.
  • Follow PPE requirements for welding, including hood and filter shades and arm/body protection.
  • Read and understand weld symbols.
  • Select proper rods or wires to perform the welding job.
  • Maintain welding machines by keeping them clean and changing liners in the welding guns.
  • Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
  • Follow proper safety rules and procedures at all times.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Trade school or community college course work preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience with heavy equipment fabrication and fitment welding.
  • Computer experience is desired, particularly the ability to use a mouse.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform all grinder tasks required.
  • Ability to properly and safely MIG weld required.
  • Ability to read and understand weld symbols required.

Work Environment

Shop manufacturing environment exposures include:

  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools, and equipment.
  • Vibration, fumes, or airborne particles.
  • Motorized vehicles, welding, and machining operations.
  • Outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock.
  • Occasional exposure to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures.
  • The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times, consistent with an industrial assembly facility, and may require hearing protection.
