Welder I

Responsibilities

• Performs all GMAW (MIG) and GTAW (TIG) welding procedures (all positions), including machine settings, bottles and necessary fittings.
• Welds stainless steel and aluminum, sets and maintains welding machines (tip, liner changes, etc.), and welds vertical, horizontal, and overhead.
• Inspects welds for cracks, burn through, and weld spatter.
• Welds mild steel and aluminum where required.
• Grinds and cleans areas where required.
• Stays current in TPM and performs basic mechanical adjustments on all equipment as needed.
• Reproduces all operations within acceptable quality and time standards.
• Sets work priorities to meet production goals as scheduled.
• Follows hazardous waste disposal program and fire prevention procedures.
• Keeps equipment and working area clean.
• Maintains all satellite and storage containers in a closed position unless adding or removing waste.
• Is familiar with the Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan and knows spill response procedures and evacuation routes.
• Ensures that hazardous waste handled is placed into the proper container(s).

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
• Must possess knowledge and experience in GMAW (MIG) and GTAW (TIG) welding machines.
• Ability to read, write, comprehend, and verbally communicate simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Must read blueprints and perform shop math to layout, fabricate, and weld various parts and assemblies.
• Knowledge and experience in the use of grinders, sanders, rivet guns, saws, and other air tools.
• Ability to read and use measuring devices.
• Ability to recognize quality expected and be able to reproduce it.
• Previous experience in assembling custom prototype metal components and ability to perform maintenance on welding equipment.
• Must pass and maintain in-house AWS Welder Certification.
• Must have general knowledge of OSHA and EPA standards.

Physical Demands

• May require wearing a mask, fresh air breathing apparatus, or other safety equipment when working with paint products emitting hazardous vapors.

• Regularly required to walk, stand; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
• Occasionally required to stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 40 lbs without assistance.
• Ability to work from various squatting, kneeling, or bending positions.
• Ability to work with arms above head.
• Ability to work from ladders or scaffolding.
• Ability to stand at a workstation for ten hours a day (minus specified breaks).
• Ability to safely use specified hand, air, power tools, and machinery.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
• Ability to work in noisy and dusty conditions.

Work Environment

The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is elevated.
