Welder – Fabricator – Mechanical Technician (REQ 315)

Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform precision welding tasks using GTAW, SMAW and GMAW processes in accordance with applicable AWS code, standards and internal quality requirements
  • Interpret and work from engineering drawings and process instructions
  • Lay out, cut, form, and prepare materials for welding (aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel) using shop equipment such as saws, shears, grinders, drill presses, etc.
  • Fabricate, fit, and assemble structural frames, mechanical components, brackets, fixtures, and custom prototype assemblies to tight tolerances
  • Conduct tack-up, fit-up, and final welding of complex assemblies while ensuring dimensional accuracy and structural integrity
  • Inspect welds and fabricated assemblies using measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, squares, dial indicators, height gauges) to verify compliance with drawings and specifications
  • Perform precision mechanical assembly including installation of bearings, bushings, shafts, fasteners, O-ring seals, actuators, and delicate electronic equipment
  • Support installation, testing, and functional validation of fabricated mechanical systems as required
  • Collaborate daily with shop management, lead technicians and possibly engineering to troubleshoot design challenges, improve design-for-manufacture, and support prototype refinement for improved efficiency
  • Perform repair, modification, and rework of existing mechanical assemblies and welded structures
  • Maintain welding equipment, fabrication tools, and shop machinery to ensure safe operational condition
  • Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and QC standards
  • Document all work performed within assigned work packages and note any deviations from drawings or specifications per our QMS
  • Maintain an exceptionally clean, organized and professional work area in alignment with APS shop practices
  • Support shop and facility maintenance during times when there is no welding work

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Proof of active American Welding Society (AWS) certifications or military equivalent must be presented upon interview
  • The ideal candidate must also demonstrate or provide examples of above average fabrication precision, mechanical aptitude, and hand/eye coordination
  • Basic computer skills for email communication, timecard entry and printing of instructions or specs as required
  • Must be capable of lifting 75 pounds

Preferred Skills and Attributes

  • Proficiency specifically welding aluminum alloys is looked upon favorably
  • Experience with lifting equipment (cranes, hydraulic jacks), vertical milling machines, lathes and digital multi-meters
