Purpose
Under general supervision, performs a normal range of heli-arc welding and brazing operations primarily in the repair of a wide variety of product castings, or various metals and alloys requiring the ability to pass required certification test, and operate own rote tooling.
Essential Job Functions
- Works from shop orders, specifications and other instructions as to rod type and amount of weld to be applied
- Plans operation sequence to preheat parts, clean and prepare area, apply and finish weld to repair cracks, non-fills, pit marks, slag holes or other defects, or to apply metal for machining operations
- Selects and sets currents, determines rod size, selects electrode, and determines other variables according to individual job requirements
- Exercises care to obtain proper penetration; avoid burring, slag inclusion or other flaws
- Some alloying of metals involved to obtain proper material strength
- Disposes of work as required
- As required, instructs others in techniques
- Operates rote tooling to smooth and finish castings, and performs various other duties as required
- Detects and reports improper operation, defective materials and unusual conditions to proper supervision
- Maintains work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition
- Follows prescribed safety regulations
- Performs a variety of other tasks of equal or lesser complexity as assigned by supervisor
Special Skills and Physical Requirements
- Performs wide range of repair and other welding on small parts of various metals and alloys following generally standard or accepted methods and techniques
- Requires the use of judgment in the selection of materials and making adjustments to machine to perform adequately
- Light physical effort continuously lifting and moving small parts, preparing surfaces and performing other duties
- Continuous mental or visual attention in performing various duties requiring constant attention
Reporting Relationships
Reports directly to the Finishing supervisor.
Education and Experience
- Knowledge of welding equipment, metal flow and basic metallurgy
- Read and interpret drawings and specifications
- Equal to complete apprenticeship training
- Over 3 and up to 4 years' experience
