Primary Job Functions
- Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.
- Performs welded repairs by utilizing air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.
- Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld, slag or spatter.
- Repairs, straightens, removes, reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, valves, etc. using various hand and power tools.
- Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars when required.
- Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must have a high school diploma, GED, or pass a Combined Basic Skills Test
- Must pass the applicable welding test as prescribed by the company
- Must be able to demonstrate job related knowledge/shills of reading blueprints and use common shop measuring devices such as straight edge rulers, welding gauges and dial gauges.
- Must be able to successfully complete qualification requirements to perform applicable Non-destructive testing procedures.
- Able to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently
- Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision
- Have analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong attention to detail
- Safety and quality focused
- Be available to work any shift, and be dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including overtime, as allowed per the union contract
Environmental & Working Conditions
- Moderate to heavy physical effort involved. Lifts and carries necessary equipment to car to perform operation.
- Climbs, walks, and balances on top of car while welding.
- Possibility of exposure to x-ray radiation hazards.
- Must follow prescribed safety rules to avoid possible injury.
- Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind off excess weld slag or spatter.
- Some outside work possible
- Minor cuts and bruises
- Must exercise caution in operation of equipment in confined areas.
- Possible exposure to hazardous materials or hazardous waste from leaks or spills of these materials while moving or storing them.
