About the role

As a Welder (HVAC Piping), you'll apply specialized welding expertise to fabricate, assemble, install, and repair high-quality piping systems for commercial HVAC, refrigeration, hydronic, and mechanical applications. Working primarily with TIG (GTAW) and Stick (SMAW) processes on carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, and other alloys, you'll produce precise, leak-free welds that meet stringent code and quality standards in fast-paced construction environments.

Our people-first culture values your craftsmanship with hands-on training, certifications, mentorship, and clear advancement paths, empowering you to contribute to reliable, sustainable commercial building systems nationwide while building a long-term career at any of our operating companies.

Modigent is a national leader delivering next-generation infrastructure, technology, and energy solutions through our family of specialized brands in HVAC, plumbing, and controls systems. With a strong coast-to-coast presence and extensive service capabilities, we empower customers, communities, and our over 1,500 team members to thrive with sustainable, efficient commercial building services. As part of our team, you'll contribute to thoughtful innovation and our people-first culture rooted in service, collaboration, and integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, fit, align, and install piping systems for HVAC and mechanical applications, including refrigerant lines, hydronic loops, steam/condensate, chilled/hot water, and support structures.
  • Perform high-quality multi-position welding (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) using TIG (GTAW) for precision root/filler passes on stainless steel/copper and Stick (SMAW) for carbon steel and heavier applications.
  • Read, interpret, and execute work from complex blueprints, isometric drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and shop drawings to determine dimensions, layouts, materials, and welding sequences.
  • Measure, cut, bevel, thread, groove, and prepare pipe ends/fittings using saws, grinders, torches, threading machines, and other tools.
  • Set up, adjust, and maintain welding equipment (machines, torches, regulators, filler materials); perform pre- and post-weld preparations (cleaning, purging with inert gas for stainless/copper).
  • Inspect materials for defects; fit and tack components accurately to ensure proper alignment and joint preparation.
  • Conduct visual inspections and non-destructive testing (as qualified) on completed welds; perform pressure/leak tests and ensure compliance with ASME, AWS, IMC, ASHRAE, and project-specific standards.
  • Install, repair, and modify valves, flanges, hangers, supports, and related piping accessories.
  • Identify and correct improper fit-ups, material issues, or installation deficiencies; collaborate with pipefitters, foremen, and other trades to resolve on-site challenges.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; adhere to all OSHA, company, and site-specific safety protocols, including proper PPE usage and hot work procedures.
  • Document work as required (weld logs, material traceability, quality records) and support project closeout.
  • Travel to project sites as assigned, including out-of-town jobs, overtime, weekends, and shift work when necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None (skilled craftsperson role focused on technical welding and installation; may provide informal guidance to apprentices or junior welders/pipefitters as needed).

Requirements

  • 3+ years of verifiable pipe welding experience, preferably in HVAC, mechanical contracting, refrigeration, or industrial piping systems.
  • High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship completion, or equivalent preferred.

Qualifications

  • AWS Certified Welder or equivalent qualification preferred; ASME Section IX qualified procedures for relevant processes/materials a plus.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use welding/tools for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
  • Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial construction settings (indoor/outdoor, mechanical rooms, rooftops, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, welding fumes, arc flash, and confined-space hazards; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as welding helmets, gloves, respirators (as needed), flame-resistant clothing, and steel-toed boots at all times — safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position.
  • Frequent regional travel to project sites and occasional on-call availability may be required as business needs dictate.

Skills

  • Proficiency in TIG (GTAW) and Stick (SMAW) welding processes on carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, and other alloys.
  • Advanced blueprint/isometric/P&ID reading and technical interpretation.
  • Precision welding, pipe fitting, and quality workmanship in multi-position applications.
  • Knowledge of welding symbols/codes (AWS D1.1, ASME B31.5/B31.9), material properties, and preparation techniques (purging, pre/post-heating).
  • Safety consciousness, attention to detail, problem-solving, and teamwork in fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation based on experience and level, with opportunities for performance incentives and tool allowances where applicable.
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus HSA options with employer contributions in select plans, and company-paid basic life and accidental death & dismemberment insurance.
  • Paid time off, holiday pay, and a 401(k) retirement savings plan to support your long-term financial well-being.
  • Professional development
