About the Role

This position provides yard maintenance support, focusing on welding, cutting, grinding, chipping, and clean-up for marine projects. The incumbent will collaborate closely with the Welding Shop Foreman, Yard Superintendent, Dredge Captains, Deck Captains, Welders, Helpers, and other skilled crafts persons, upholding Orion’s core values of Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, all grounded in Integrity.

Responsibilities

• Work as assigned by the Welding Shop Foreman to complete marine yard support projects.
• Gather project scope information and obtain necessary permits before starting welding tasks.
• Cut, weld, chip, and grind metal as required by project specifications.
• Use oxygen-acetylene cutting torches to remove metal from existing structures.
• Weld sheet metal pieces after pile driving.
• Perform stick rod welding in all positions to complete jobs.
• Rig cables for lifting and moving objects.
• Handle placement of steel plates and sheet piles using cranes, winches, cables, and hand tools.
• Operate saws, presses, drills, and grinders to fabricate repair parts.
• Inspect and make minor repairs to welding equipment; report needed parts to the Foreman.
• Procure materials and supplies for project completion.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure safe and efficient project completion.
• Participate in Safety and Environmental initiatives to comply with regulations and improve company programs.

Requirements

• Minimum of two years welding experience or equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Good knowledge of welding trade practices and materials.
• Understanding of physical characteristics of metals used in marine construction.
• Familiarity with marine equipment and safe work practices in a marine environment.
• Ability to pass standard welding tests demonstrating job proficiency.
• Skill in stick rod welding, acetylene and arc welding equipment, hand/power tools, and interpreting welding blueprints.
• Effective verbal communication and ability to maintain simple project records.

Physical/Mental Requirements

• Perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Wear and properly use PPE, including hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, and personal flotation devices.
• Qualified and physically able to drive passenger vehicles to job sites.
• Capable of wearing welding face shields, personal flotation devices, and self-contained breathing apparatus.
• Stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, or sit for extended periods.
• Perform repetitive movements involving feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back.
• Climb vertical ladders up to 40'-50' in height.
• Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
• Lift objects up to 50 lbs. independently.
• Adapt to extreme temperature changes and prolonged outdoor exposure.
• Work 9-12 hour days.
• Remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately.
• Evacuate work areas quickly in emergencies.
