Duties And Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, fit, align, and install piping systems for HVAC and mechanical applications, including refrigerant lines, hydronic loops, steam/condensate, chilled/hot water, and support structures.
  • Perform high-quality multi-position welding (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) using TIG (GTAW) for precision root/filler passes on stainless steel/copper and Stick (SMAW) for carbon steel and heavier applications.
  • Read, interpret, and execute work from complex blueprints, isometric drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and shop drawings to determine dimensions, layouts, materials, and welding sequences.
  • Measure, cut, bevel, thread, groove, and prepare pipe ends/fittings using saws, grinders, torches, threading machines, and other tools.
  • Set up, adjust, and maintain welding equipment (machines, torches, regulators, filler materials); perform pre- and post-weld preparations (cleaning, purging with inert gas for stainless/copper).
  • Inspect materials for defects; fit and tack components accurately to ensure proper alignment and joint preparation.
  • Conduct visual inspections and non-destructive testing (as qualified) on completed welds; perform pressure/leak tests and ensure compliance with ASME, AWS, IMC, ASHRAE, and project-specific standards.
  • Install, repair, and modify valves, flanges, hangers, supports, and related piping accessories.
  • Identify and correct improper fit-ups, material issues, or installation deficiencies; collaborate with pipefitters, foremen, and other trades to resolve on-site challenges.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; adhere to all OSHA, company, and site-specific safety protocols, including proper PPE usage and hot work procedures.
  • Document work as required (weld logs, material traceability, quality records) and support project closeout.
  • Travel to project sites as assigned, including out-of-town jobs, overtime, weekends, and shift work when necessary.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Experience: 1+ years of verifiable pipe welding experience, preferably in HVAC, mechanical contracting, refrigeration, or industrial piping systems.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship completion, or equivalent preferred.
  • Certifications: AWS Certified Welder or equivalent qualification preferred; ASME Section IX qualified procedures for relevant processes/materials a plus; valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use welding/tools for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial construction settings (indoor/outdoor, mechanical rooms, rooftops, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, welding fumes, arc flash, and confined-space hazards; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as welding helmets, gloves, respirators (as needed), flame-resistant clothing, and steel-toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None (skilled craftsperson role focused on technical welding and installation; may provide informal guidance to apprentices or junior welders/pipefitters as needed).
