Key Responsibilities
- Perform full-penetration and multi-pass welds on structural steel, piping systems, and plate.
- Read and interpret complex drawings, weld symbols, and geometric tolerancing.
- Fit, clamp, and align components using jigs, magnets, pipe stands, and tack welds.
- Use flame cutters, plasma torches, gougers, and power tools to shape or remove material.
- Monitor weld bead profiles, arc characteristics, and consumable usage for quality control.
- Coincide with fabricators and machinists to ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) precisely.
- Pre-inspect materials for cleanliness, ID stamping, and compliance with welding codes.
- Record heat input and filler metal data when required for code documentation.
- Conduct informal inspections and visual checks before calling in QA/QC.
- Work with the supervisor and team to develop and implement approved improvements.
Team Development & Mentorship
- Act as a mentor and leader for less-experienced welders, sharing knowledge and skills and fostering team accountability.
- Provide hands-on training and guidance on safety protocols and standard practices.
- Aid other welders in interpreting blueprints, sketches, and schematics to plan and execute projects.
- Foster a collaborative learning environment that encourages questions and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
- Typically 1–2 years of welding experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees and management at all levels.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and mechanical aptitude.
- Able to work 40 hours per week on a regular basis, with additional hours as needed; overtime is anticipated and may include evenings and weekends.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift heavy components up to 50 lbs.
- Physical stamina and strength to handle heavy materials.
- Ability to stand, climb, push, pull, crouch, and kneel for extended periods.
