Duties And Responsibilities

• Fits, aligns, and clamps tank car parts, usually in jigs and fixtures, to prepare for welding steel
• Performs complicated manual or semi-automatic arc welding of railcar parts, sub-assemblies, and assemblies on the bench, floor, or assembly line
• Operates weld machine maintaining heat and speed of travel to assure penetration and weld bead size
• Removes weld slag, and preheats work, according to written weld processes
• Visually inspects weld work, repairs defective welds, performs minor repairs to equipment and performs occasional air arc or flame cutting to help repair defective welds
• Assists in training other welders by conducting on the job training when requested
• Reads and comprehends blueprints or weld drawings and procedures
• Ensures that safety and housekeeping standards are met and maintained

Qualifications

• Ability to pass applicable weld assessments to perform work as a welder 2
• Ability to use weld gauges and computers
• Ability to read and comprehend blueprints or weld drawings and procedures
• Ability to work in a team
• Learn to operate a forklift and overhead crane and complete certifications through company training
