About the role

The Weekend Program Respiratory Therapist, CRT/RRT position at UPMC Mercy is designed for individuals seeking a flexible schedule without compromising the acuity, teamwork, or growth opportunities in respiratory care. This role integrates into a high-acuity patient population, including trauma, burn, neuro, and rehab care, at a Level 1 Trauma Center.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates the appropriateness of medical orders and interprets clinical data to optimize patient clinical objectives.
  • Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators, ensuring specified parameters of treatment.
  • Operates equipment to administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs to patients, observing equipment function and adjusting as necessary.
  • Maintains patient’s chart containing pertinent identification and therapy information, orders repairs when needed, demonstrates respiratory care procedures to trainees, and supervises students during training.
  • Reads prescriptions, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine treatment requirements.
  • Maintains patient’s physiological responses to therapy, performs bronchopulmonary drainage, assists with breathing exercises, and performs pulmonary function tests.
  • Consults with physicians in the event of adverse reactions.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a CoARC-approved Respiratory program required, or temporary license eligible with approval from HR.
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRTT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required.
  • Licenses and clearances: CPR, Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS), Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT), Osteopathic Respiratory Care, Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP), Act 33, Act 34, Act 73 FBI Clearance.
