About the role

The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking licensed practical nurses for on-call positions at the Washington Veterans Home in Port Orchard, Washington.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, carry out, evaluate, and revise treatment plans for individual residents based on personal observations and recommendations of physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and/or other nurses.
  • Administer medications and monitor treatments, assess resident condition (including skin assessment), and promote resident participation in recreational activities.
  • Suction patients, administer oxygen, catheterization, irrigation; administer IV solutions, colostomy and trach care; maintain gastric feeding tubes and pumps.
  • Process physician orders.
  • Assist with routine rehabilitative and maintenance activities.

Qualifications

  • Current Washington state practical nurse license or unencumbered practical nurse multistate license.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the English language, read, write, and speak English.
  • Perform data entry; maintain confidentiality; provide a positive living environment for residents relating to meeting psychosocial needs; follow written and verbal directions; document and report observed changes in patient condition and behavior.

Special Requirements

  • Pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks.
  • Comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Maintain a valid practical nursing license and provide from the State of Washington Department of Health.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance and be willing to work as needed.
  • Complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in-service, and other required training.
  • Sign the confidentiality statement for all employees.

Pay

This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules. This salary range reflects increases effective July 1st, 2026.

Schedule

Shifts for on-call staff are scheduled on a rotational basis. The on-call expectations for this position requires that staff be available for at least four (4) full shifts per month. This position is not eligible for telework.
